NYC: 50th Birthday trip Dec - hotel help!

NYC: 50th Birthday trip December 11th - 15th

I am planning on taking my (young at heart) mother to New York to celebrate her 50th Birthday. This will be her 1st trip to NYC (& my 2nd trip there).
I am about to book the hotel and after much research have narrowed it down to 2 choice & would appreciated all input before I book.

1: The St Regis Club at Essex House hotel: Superior room

2: The Regency: Either a Standard (twin)room or a luxury King room (with views of park Ave or 61st st) is available.

Both hotels fit my criteria of being close to central park and being more classic than modern in appearance & style - however if anyone has recently stayed in any of the rooms described above I would really appreciate your input.
Also in total the St Regis/Essex house room is coming in at around $500 more - is it worth this additional cost - I am happy to pay more for a special experience as I want my mother to have a fantastic time - please let me have your throughts

once I have booked the hotel I will post again to get your input & opinion on the itinerary I have drawn up.

Many thanks

Well for a while, people here were raving about the St Regis Club at the Essex House but interestingly no one's mentioned it lately (which means nothing). Also, ironically, I just suggested the Regency to someone else on another thread. It's a hotel that doesn't get mentioned much.

Have you also checked the Ritz Carlton Central Park (very close to the Essex House). It's been getting raves lately.

Between your 2, I think you may feel more "special" at the St. Regis Club but reading reviews on tripadvisor, it sounds like the rooms may be a bit small. It also sounds like people who are used to St. Regis level service from other of their hotels may be disappointed here.

You may find the location of the St Regis Club on Central Park South more convenient for theater if you intend on doing that. If you do the St. Regis, I'd try to get a park view room. I also wonder what the difference in price is with the regular Essex House which gets much more enthusiastic reviews on tripadvisor. You should read the reviews on tripadvisor if you haven't already.

Good luck. Your Mother is a lucky lady.

mclaurie many thanks for your reply.

Thank you for the Ritz carlton suggestion but as we are travelling from the UK I am buying a package deal as it is saving £££ on the airfare & hotel so I really do have to decide between the 2 hotels I mentioned.

You have reinforced my view that the St regis/Essex House location is more convenient (my mother loves the theatre & wants to explore central park) I do want to get the park view but cannot get this confirmed (booking through expedia) as the room description simply says " St regis club superior room - some room have view of central park" - I thought that once booked through expedia I would contact the hotel directly and put in a request for a parkview if available as this trip is a special occasion (birthday) - No guarantees this way but hey if you don't ask you don't get....so its worth a try

I thought I would tell her we would be staying at the Essex house & then when we arrive surprise her with the St Regis club room!

I think you'll be very happy there. Hope you have a great trip. It's a wonderful time to be in NYC. There are 2 wonderful (and expensive) restaurants in your hotel, Cafe Botanica and Alain Ducasse. The later charges $250/person for a tasting menu but the former has a $35/person dinner and also a wonderful weekend brunch.
