New, Hot Hawaiian CD's??

I love playing my Hawaiian CD's in the car! I find them especially relaxing when I'm stressed.
Do any of you know what the best new CD's are ? What are your favorites? I'd like to make a list of ones to pick up while I'm on the Big Island and Kauai in May.

The few I have are :
1) The Makasaha Sons & Friends na pua o hawai'i
2) Iz Israel's Kamakawiwo'ole
3) Keali'i Reichel's Kawaipunahele
4) Paradise Music collection 2003

Mahalo!

She's much too nice to shamelessly plug her company, but for the very best advice ask our very knowledgeable AuntieMaria at mele.com

Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom has a new one out. The slack key kid, Makana, also has a new one out but it delves more into experimental rock.

Try mele.com they have several links you can visit and sample many of the artists. We've been able to find some at Borders.

Not new, obviously (and unfortunately there won't be any more new ones) but my favorite is still "Alone in IZ World".

Thanks for all the suggestions and I will check out the link iceeu2! I had forgotten what the link was and lost it during a cp crash, so it's been a couple years since I looked at it.

You can try looking up the Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners (and nominees) for a yearly update of what's new in Hawaii music.

I thought you used to be able to see her live on the air on the computer? Is that right?
And Jolie, the list you suggest is linked on auntie's site.

Thanks! Now, maybe I just need to get auntie to pick some out for me! Do they have a physical shop/store? That I might see on Kauai?

OSB, I found this article very interesting about Iz' recording of "Somewhere over the Rainbow"

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...DGNKBLRRV1.DTL

I didn't realize he was one of only 1500 full blooded Hawai'ians in the world.

I didn't realize he recorded the song in one take - and never played the song again.

I knew that was my favorite CD because the song was on it. I knew it touched me. I had no idea of the impact the song had -

Rainbow" came to personify Hawai'i to the outside world. Celebrities publicly announced their love of Israel's music: novelists, actors, directors, baseball players, sumo wrestlers. Bruddah IZ was the state's first artist in history to have an album certified gold. Posters and calendars of his face decorated record stores around the world. "Over the Rainbow" became the No. 1 bestselling song downloaded from the World Music section of iTunes. Israel had produced the most recognizable and beloved Hawai'ian song in 50 years. And he didn't live to see any of it.

Fast-selling new Hawaiian CD releases, you ask??? 8-)

PILIOHA by Pilioha
HE ALOHA by Cody Pueo Pata
`AINA KUPUNA by Hoku Zuttermeister
HAWAIIAN CLASSIC SERIES: HULA by Nathan Aweau

And shhhhhhhh...don't tell anyone about these upcoming new releases, 'kay? Raiatea Helm (next month, hopefully), Tony Conjugacion (May 8), and Israel Kamakawiwo`ole (June 26).

As for compilation (various artist) albums, which give you great music _and_ great musicians:
PURE HAWAIIAN
PURE HAWAIIAN `ELUA
DESTINATION HAWAI`I
PRIDE OF PUNAHELE 2

Enormous. can. worms. opened

We love to talk about Hawaiian music.

You MUST have:

1. Amy & Willie LIVE
( Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom & Willie K)
They both have multiple CD's. This is just the happiest, funnest thing going. Her song Palehua is just the most beautiful song.

2. Keola Beamer- Wooden Boat
Yeah, it's old. It's soft. It's wonderful. Listen to it as you look at the moon rise on the sea. Sigh.

3. Pu' Ohana - Pua Carnation. Classic, classic Hawaii. This is on my headphones every time I fly to the islands. Gets me in the mood.

4. Na Palapalai- Makani 'Olu'olu
Fun, family at home signing groove.

5. Hapa. Most anything

You can also stream KPOA ( www.kpoa.com) from Maui to get more up to date ideas. There is a terrific Big Island station that has older, more classic (less pop/rap stuff), but I can't remember the name right now.

We only own two (gifts from my bil, who lives on Maui), but we like them both - Amy and Willie K Live and Raiatea Helm's Sweet and Lovely.
