Need lodging -- upcountry Maui
Any Fodorites out there with suggestions for lodging for 2 in upcountry Maui? We'll be there next month for a conference in Pukalani -- would like to spend the first weekend in the Makawao/Kula area...

Nice...but pricey.
I think we'll opt for Kahului for the weekend (ugh), then hele on to stay with friends elsewhere. Would _really_ like to stay at the cottages by Mama's Fish House:

But will have to settle for lunch there, instead.

I love the Makawao property known as Banyan Tree House. Stayed in Gardenia Cottage a couple years ago and have plans for the main plantation house in 2007. If cottages are available, they will rent for just 2 nights.

Does anyone know if David Paul's house is still available for rental? I've long dreamed of staying there, but I haven't been able to locate any information on it anymore...
I would love to stay in the Kula area our next trip.

auntiemaria: My wife and I stayed at a perfect choice three years ago. We rented an efficiency apartment. The owners had remodeled the lower level of their house into a separate apartment. According to town limits, we were in Haiku, but the house was only a three minute drive from downtown Makawao. We had a bedroom, bath, living/dining area, and a kitchenette for $400 per week. I found it through VRBO. I checked my records but couldn't find the name or phone number. I don't even know if the owners still rent the unit, but it's worth checking VRBO.

We stayed in one of the garden cottages at Mama's a few years ago for approx. $200 per night. It had a nice private patio w/bbq and then you can stroll a few feet over to Mama's for a meal or just cocktails/dessert.
