Moving to Hartford, Connecticut
My daughter is considering accepting a postion in Hartford and we are totally unfamiliar with the area. Can somebody suggest either a section of the city that is safe and a nice community for a young, single woman (24 years old) or a suburb that she should consider. She is looking to rent an apartment. Thank you for your help.

Hello,
I would suggest Manchester and Windsor Locks as good suburbs. I don't live in the area, I live in Boston, but my sister has lived in these 2 places for the last 7 years. I go visit her quite a bit, and both are lovely places, communities. I prefer Manchester as a "younger" community, and I think a 24 year old woman would have more fun there! Lots of shopping/restuarants/hang outs. I definitely think you should both check it out!

Would agree with chgeeb on Manchester (closer) or Windsor Locks. Is your daughter going to have a car? Manchester is a huge mall area with a bunch of apartment complexes.
Do you know where your daughter would be working? There are some nice apartments in Hartford but in general Hartford is a desolate city.
What does your daughter like to do?

Thank you for your help. My daughter just interviewed with a theatre on Church Street in Hartford. She will buy a car as she was warned that the public transportation system may not be the safest at night.
She is not the party girl type nor does she frequent the bar scene. When your life is in the theatre, there isn't much time allowed for leisure.
Will check out the Manchester area. Thank you for that suggestion- keep 'em coming!
Thanks

I'm with Jaya on this one. West Hartford, close to the city, is great for a young single woman, a small city unto itself, with good shops, restaurants in their downtown, and both apartments and condos.

I lived in Hartford, South Windsor, West Hartford and Wethersfield, each for many years, and am very familiar with all the other towns mentioned as well. I definitely recommend West Hartford as first choice, and an added plus is she wouldn't need to deal with highway if either weather or traffic are particularly bad on a given day/night, because she could just drive in by way of Farmington Avenue.

How dod it work out? Theater Works is a great institution to work for and the sows are excellent. if she got teh job, have her talk to the staff - downtown Hartford is filling up fast with youg people moving into new and newly renovated aprtments.... and their dogs are coming with them...always a good sign!
