Monterey/Pebble Beach to San Diego
Retired, golfing couple, looking to do alot of easy site seeing-no hiking- looking for
wonderful restaurants, shopping, drives, sites in the area. Considering driving
from Monterey to San Diego but would like to know approximately how long it would
take. Final destination of trip is Carlsbad/Del Mar area and would love again any
hotel/restaurant, sites, recommendations. Trip takes place end of October. Thank you to all for any help you can give us.

We arrived in Monterey last Tuesday and drove a quick nine miles north on the 101 to have dinner at the Frutti DE Mar Italian restaurant in Marina. Take the Del Monte Blvd. exit to 3056 locatede in a small row of stores on the right.
What a special hidden gem this place is. We had seafood linguini in a cream sauce that included shrimp, muscles, scallops, and crab meat. Utterly fantastic. Service was great and the restaurant was spotless. No doubt the nicest dinner we had, with a wonderful menu to select from, during our twelve day trip. www.fruttidemargrill.com

It's about 400 miles to Carlsbad, figure 8 hours since you have to go though LA.
Good route is down Highway 1 from Monterey to Ventura and then catch the 101 to the 405 which will take you to I-5 and then onto Carlbad.

Hit the wrong key and posted before I was done....en route from Monterey some interesting stopping points are any of the parks along the Big Sur on Route 1; San Siemon (Hearst Castle), Cambria Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, the wine region between SLO and Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara.
We love The Sow's Ear in Cambrai, favorite SLO spot is Cafe Roma and in San Diego area we like Roy's La Jolla and the Winesell & Brasserie-this place is tucked out of the way in a office complex on Mira Mesa Road.

A few recommendations once you get to San diego:
Carlsbad itself is lovely. There is a Vigilucci's there which has excellent Italian food. You can drive south along the ocean from there. Encinitas along Hwy 101 which is the coastal drive is also delightful. We enjoy Via Italia Trattoria there. Their 4 cheese pizza is fantastic and they do a terrific happy hour from 4-6 pm.
Tomiko in Encinitas also does a great happy hour and has wonderful sunset ocean views; it is perched above Encinitas.
Continue south to Solana beach. Shopping is wonderful on Cedros which is just one block east of Hwy 101; it is distinctive and local. They also have a farmer's market there on Sunday afternoons, around 1-5 pm.
Further south, there is Del Mar which is wonderful, and La jolla and Coronado. I would recommend checking out Balboa Park if you haven't been before and a local classic dining spot is in the Park itself.... it is called Prado. I love the tres leches cake there for dessert.
