Mesa Verde Fire

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%257E4624%257E762424%257E,00.html

Tuesday, July 30, 2002 - MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK - A wildfire in the heart of Mesa Verde National Park forced roughly 2,000 visitors and 100 employees to flee the world-famous preserve of ancient Indian ruins as flames quickly scorched up to 1,600 acres of high desert brush on Monday.

The park, now indefinitely closed, already had experienced a decline in visitation this year. June 2002 figures were down by 12,009 people, almost 13 percent, from June of last year, according to park officials.

Please, there are fires in the west each and every year, this is nothing new, the forest will come back as well as the tourists.

This year is different. The fires are near residential areas, the timber is exceptionally dry, and resources are stretched because there are so many fires.
Some people are vacationing in these areas and need the information more detailed than on your own local news reports.

Mesa Verse in Colorado.

To who cares, there have been numerous posts about ppl planning to visit this wonderful place. If I was planning my valuable vacation time I would like to know this type of information. Would not you? I thought that this was what this forum was all about? Perhaps I was wrong?

You might want to make a back up plan. Hopefully, the fire will be under control and doused soon. But, apparently, a sewage treatment facility at the park was burnt. So, I wonder if they may be closed for the season. (just speculation)
