Maui weather starting to worry me!

Hi - 9 days until we leave for Maui! I have been watching the weather on the internet and was just wondering if anyone has heard the long term forecast for the Islands in the next two weeks. I have been watching the live webcam for Kaanapali Beach daily and it doesn't look good. High surf warning...flash flood warning..no one in the pools or ocean. The Sheraton isn't even putting their cabanas out. A couple of days the pools looked like they were closed. I need to prepare our two boys (10 and 12) if they cannot be in the water. We are staying at the Whaler just down from the Sheraton on Kaanapali Beach. Mahalo for any information or words of encouragement.

This is the webcam I have been watching.

Island weather this time of year is highly variable.

Over the weekend, we were clobbered by a storm. Monday dawned on Kaua`i with a brilliant sun, clear skies, and temps nearing 80. Tuesday dawned with 30-40 mph winds, driving rain, and temps at only 70 or so. Today? Gorgeous again!

If you get a rainy day while you're in Ka`anapali, take a drive and you'll find the sun elsewhere (almost guaranteed!).

Absolutely Riggsie, Auntie Maria is right. I can't imagine that every day you will be there will have rain. We spent 9 days there in January, and the days we had clouds in Wailea, we took advantage of our rental and drove up to Kanpali and Kapalua, and it was gorgeous. There is soooooooooo much to do there, your boys won't be bored even if it does rain. It is just so relaxing and warm, I can't think any day, even a rainy day, in Maui as being a bad day.
Hang in there! It will be fine.
Aloha!

Sounds like a fun Spring break trip! However, be prepared for some windy days. A couple years ago, we stayed at the Alii right there on Kaanapali Beach, and while we tried to lay out in the sun (the weather was nice and warm and the sun was out), it was so windy. I had, of course, lathered myself in sunscreen, and within 5 minutes I felt and looked like a starfish -- all prickly and covered with the sand that was blowing and blowing!

But fear not...take a whale watch trip out of Lahaina. It's amazing how much calmer the winds were 10 minutes away. It's prime season for you to see the whales, so plan to go on at least one outing!

There's also great snorkeling at Black Rock Beach, just a short walk down from the Whaler. You can rent all the gear right there. Be sure to get your kids a couple of those disposable underwater cameras. You'll get great photos of all the fish. Your kids will love that!

We really enjoyed the luau at the Marriott. Good food and great entertainment! Discounts are available at many places.

Happy travels...and Aloha!!

Thanks for all the great info. We have been to Maui 3 times and have always had great weather.. I am just more worried about the high surf warning and if that stops the ocean excursions for snorkeling and whale watches. When I was looking at web cams during the flash flood and high surf warnings it looked like the pools and cabanas were all closed along Kaanapali beach and just assumed all of the island were under the same warnings? The Weather already looks better. As I have said before a rainy day on Maui is still better than a sunny day in Idaho! Only 7 days left! Mahalo.

Riggsie,

Hello! We just got back from Maui 1.5 weeks ago and we had wonderful weather the whole time. The last day there (Feb.24) there were red flags out on the beach just past the Sheraton, but it wasn't out in front of the Sheraton. Maybe Black Rock blocked most of the stronger currents, because the area in front of the Sheraton actually had calmer waves than the day before. I had no problem letting my 9 and 6 year old play in the ocean. The area in front of the Sheraton always seemed to be much calmer than just a couple of hotels down. We had stayed at the Sheraton and were glad we did for that reason.

My in-laws left on that Friday when the big storm was hitting. They said it was a nasty one, but kind of interesting to watch. If you do run into rain, they went to the Aquarium and said it was pretty good. We had saved that for a rainy day, but thankfully we didn't need it.

Have a great time. By the way we are also from Idaho (Eagle) and you are right----even a rainy day in Maui is better than a winter day in Idaho.

Hey, it's rainy season, although in March, it's towards the end of it, so you probably won't catch much. Have a fabulous time.

Just returned from Maui this morning (stayed at the Sheraton on Kaanapali). When we arrived in Maui on Wednesday it was very pleasant. People said that it had been raining for 4 days straight. We had partly cloudy skies the first day and then clear beutiful warm days the remainder of the trip (it was very humid, though). Tons of kids swimming, body boarding, and snorkeling. When we left the skies were sunny with a slight breeze. No high surf warnings at all. It was supposed to be warming up (into the 80's) and the trade winds were starting to pick up a little.
The weather is so unpredicatble this time of year, so it could be completely different once you get there. We were on the Big Island for most of the stormy days and weren't bothered by it much. Just went inside for drinks and snacks when the rain picked up and then headed back outside once it stopped.

Planning on writing a trip report, but just got in at 1 am this morning... Needless to say, I'm a little beat.
We were worried about the snorkeling on Maui because of the storms before we arrived. BUT, the snorkeling at Black Rock was the best I've ever seen!! Unfortunately no turtles this time, but tons of fish! The water was extremely clear. It was best right out on the point (Sheraton side) right past where the surf crashes up against the rock. My husband and I spent hours every day in the water. The fish variety was far better than I remembered it being last time we were there. We could even hear the whales singing!! Already thinking about my next trip....
