Haven't been there in a while so can't recommend places to stay but we have been there a number of times and really enjoyed it. Do take enough time tho. It is a big island with many small towns and lots to see and do. Make sure you have your ferry reservations long in advance (especially if you are taking your car and we really needed our car to get around). Really a lovely place. Also recommend at least a day on Nantucket. Really fun to see but be careful walking on the cobblestone streets. Most of all have a great time!!

We just returned from MV and were a little disappointed. We stayed in Oak Bluffs, which is OK if you're in your 20s, like to party and like LOTS of other tourists. We stayed in a B & B (Narraganset House) which was OK - nothing spectacular for $115 per night. Clean and very close to main street, but no air conditioning. We liked the town of Edgartown the best and also Vineyared Haven. If we ever go back, we would stay in Edgartown, pay bigger bucks and get a nicer place to stay. We did not take our car and you are restricted w/o one, however, there were several places to rent jeeps, mopeds, etc. We did eat at a great place which was highly recommended and reasonably priced - Jimmy Seas in OB. Don't bother with nice clothes or dresses - they only tag you as a tourist. It is chic to look sloppy. Anyway good luck. Getting to the ferry (we went from Wood's Hole) is a challenge in itself.

Our family has been going to Vineyard Haven and staying at the Causeway Harborview Apartments for 20+ years now. We love it. We have rented a house, cottage and studio apt; all are reasonably priced. The accomodations are clean, home-like, and the kitchenettes are equipped with everything you'd need. They're are no phones in the rooms or the house which we liked, but if you are staying a long time you can get service installed. They have a nice pool and a a view of the harbor.
Edgartown is a the place to go for a really nice meal and upscale dining and shopping. Oak Bluffs, is the place for entertainment. Gay Head is the scenic beach and South Beach is the swimming "surf" beach. It's a great place to vacation if you love the ocean. Go for a catamaran ride out of Edgartown...visit the winery. 4th of July is rather crowded. You have to plan your cross-island travel accordingly. And start planning well in advance, if you plan to bring your car. Plan at least 3 to 4 months in advanced,a car is a must if your staying a week or longer if not you can rent 1 there. If you have any questions e-mail us and we'll be glad to help. Bobby and family

If you do not have kids, My wife and I stayed at a BB in Vineyard Haven last June called the Thorncroft Inn. I would recommend it. They can be found (where else) on the web. I warn you that getting a ferry reservation to take a car over can be a real pain but in my opinion is worth the hassle. If you wait til you get to the island to rent a car you will pay more for it.
