We'll be driving around Virginia in July and as we're from the UK I've been using MapQuest to plot our route.
This is fine for when we want to get from A to B as quickly as possible but some-times I'd like to take a scenic route.
Does anyone know of any internet mapping sites that would provide me with a more relaxed,scenic driving route?

May I suggest you get some good road maps of the state and plot your travels using that. Try to stay off the Interstate Highways as much as possible. Most online mapping services don't really take into consideration the slow but scenic drives between different points when plotting a journey..

Most maps I use have a green dotted line alongside roadways that are deemed "scenic". So, I'd pull out my VA roadmap and look for those green dotted lines.

Google the state tourist office in Richmond and request a state highway map, a civil war battlefield map and a Virginia by-way map. The byways are the rural and scenic roads. Many of them will be parallel to the interstates. Route 11 in the Shenandoah Valley for example is parallel to I-81.

Any decent road atlas or state road map which can easily be bought, if necessary, in the US will also show routes considered to be "scenic" also.
