Beaver Creek,Co is great for spring skiing (March).
There is much less traffic than Vail, and the lift ticket is valid at both. Salt Lake City has alot to offer for skiers! I personally wouldn't ski east of
Colorado (ie: Vermont, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota). Lake Tahoe is also great.

I'm a Maine native and a addicted skier for more than 30 years, so I can speak for experience.
"The Loaf", or Sugarloaf, USA, is in Kingfield. Lots of vertical, variety...assorted lifts will get you there but be prepared to wait in line a while. It's usually crowded, but if you don't mind lines, the skiing is great. Lots of night life, condo's and hotels galore.
Sunday River in Newry, used to give The Loaf a lot of competition. They're now both owned by the American Skiing Co., so the tickets are interchangeable (as with Killington in VT, and others). Sunday River has been developed tremendously over the past 3 or 4 years. It used to be great, bigger mountain skiing but not-quite-discovered. That's gone forever. But there's a LOT of terrain and more than adequate lifts to get you a great day of skiing. An abundance of lodging is available at the mountain or in nearby Bethel, near the NH border.
For my personal taste, I stay with Saddleback in Rangeley. It needs new equipment, which is sure to happen after resolution of a land-use debate over a portion of the Appalachian Trail that runs over the "saddle". The skiing is great, it's a quiet mountain (never any wait in line to speak of), and the town is beautiful year-round. Best for families...tickets are cheaper, too.
Hope this is helpful. Do try Maine, I think you'll be back. But try us in Autumn, as well. And summer is great...only too short!
Have fun!

My husband and I took a trip from Texas to Maine to visit his parents during the Christmas holidays about two years ago. We took a ski trip to Sugarloaf, USA in Kingfield, Maine. It was the most beautiful and romantic places I have ever seen in my life. Kingfield is a quaint little hamlet full of little shops and great restaurants. The food is good and hearty and the people are very friendly and helpful. The mountains at Sugarloaf are beautiful and the skiing is great. Hope you have a great time wherever you go.
