I've never been to Catalina but thought you might be interested to know that last Sunday's New York Times Travel section had a big article on Catalina written by Todd Purdum (Dee Dee Myers' husband) with info about hotels, restaurants, online resources about Catalina, etc. You can access it online at www.nytimes.com by clicking on "Travel." Good luck.

Catalina is a great place to spend a weekend...especially if you have a boat and enjoy SCUBA or snorkeling. Because it's going to be a holiday...lodging is going to be pretty tight and pretty expensive. There is a website (www.catalina.com) that has all the info you may need. If you're looking to blow the budget...the Inn at Mt. Ada is a 6 room mansion, B&B, on a hill overlooking Avalon harbor (used to be the Wrigley Mansion). In season it's outregeously expensive...but includes 3 meals a day, unlimited snacks and beverages, and exclusive use of a golf cart (which usually rents for $30 an hour in town). Closer to the harbor and a bit less expensive is the Hotel Metropole, with large rooms and ocean views from some rooms. Make reservations now, however, since everything fills up early for the 4th.

Catalina is one of my favorite getaways. You can contact their Chamber of Commerce and they can help you locate a house to rent for the weekend. I got one last year for $90/night and we had 8 people. July 4th might be harder but worth the effort. Hopefully, your private boat will have a dingy that can shuttle you back and forth to land. If not, you can take the shoreboat (channel 9 on vhf) for $3 each time. Avalon's not that big, so you'll discover everything you need just by walking around. Go fishing around the back side of the island and check out some of the other coves. Unless you know someone that has a mooring, plan to get there on July 2 or even on the 1st to secure one. Sleep on the boat if you can, that's what I do most of the time and it works out well.
