Can anyone comment on the Zwaanendael Inn (previously the New Devon Inn) in Lewes? I am thinking about staying there over the Fourth of July holiday. Is it worth staying in Lewes, or should I try for one of the beach towns (Rehoboth, Dewey)?

What about restaurants? In Lewes, I'm considering La Rosa Negra and Buttery.

If it's worth driving to Rehoboth, some restaurants there that interest me include Back Porch Cafe, Chez La Mer, La La Land, Blue Moon.

Whether you stay in Lewes or go elsewhere really depends in what you're looking for.

Lewes is very quiet Of course, Rehobeth is just a short drive away, so if you're looking for a quiet place to stay and some action, you can stay in Lewes and then head over to Rehobeth each night. Sorry, can specifically comment on the Zwndl Inn.

Both the Buttery and La Rosa are excellent. I prefer La Rosa, but you won't go wrong with either. Make reservations!

Lewes does have a beach area that, technically, is on the Delaware River, not the ocean. It, too, is quiet.

I would recommend you stay at either Rehobeth or Bethany Beach. Dewey has the reputation of being rowdy with lots of "group houses" and wild parties. But, maybe that's what you are looking for.

Be warned that the traffic in that area can be brutal. It would be quite easy to spend an hour in the six miles between Lewes and Rehoboth, particularly over the weekend of the 4th. Remember, you're dealing with the outlet mall traffic as well as holidaymakers.

We love Lewes, though we rarely get down there any more. It does have the mild bayside beach, but also quick access to Cape Henlopen State Park on the Atlantic.

At this point, lodging down there might be tight for the 4th...

Lewes is a charming New England-like town that never seems to get overly crowded. It has a nice main street with restaurants, shops and antique galleries. Rehoboth is much more active in every way. The beach suffered some major erosion over the winter but is still nice, as is Cape Henlopen State Park.
Just ate at the Buttery last weekend and it was nice. I would also highly recommend Striper Bites on Savannah (new last year). Had brunch at Back Porch 2 weeks ago and ejoyed it, as always. Have eaten at all the places you mentioned and the 2 I like best in Rehoboth are Fusion and Eden. You might want to throw them in your mix (sorry to add more confusion).
As others noted, it will be VERY crowded that weekend. FYI, Dewey doesn't seem like the right choice for you given the restaurants, etc you listed (it is more for college age kids and is totally charmless)
