Lake Tahoe in August- any special places, things to see?
A free visit with relatives dropped in my lap as renters have cancelled out on week in August on a small house in Tahoe. I have never been there before and would appreciate any day trip ideas or favs you might have from your experience. Thanks!

I would highly recommend the Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. It is on the north shore. It is a beautiful location, seating on the ground or in low chairs that you bring, in a sand dune area. The stage is by the lake so you have a great view of the scenery. You bring a picnic dinner to eat before the show. It can get cold, tho, so bring heavy jackets. Just got back from a quick weekend in Tahoe, having been there before for the skiing. Multiple sites around the lake with a variety of activities (JetSkiing, boat rentals, pedal boats, horse back riding, parasailing, site seeing lake tours, etc.). We did a sunset champagne cruise on a catamaran - absolutely spectacular! You can make same day reservations so you can pick the day the weather is right for a good sunset. They only take about 30 people so the atmosphere is great and they walk around serving you champagne as you glide along the lake...... If you like to gamble visit the Stateline area - Harvey's, Harrah's, etc. You can take day trips to area wineries. You can even ride the trams up some of the ski mountains and drink in the scenery. You'll have more to do than you have time for! Have a great trip!!

Your gonna love that area! We did the same a few years ago visiting our son in the Air Force. We did the same as above...rented a boat for an afternoon and parasailing; great fun. Take time to enjoy the scenery and mountains. Our kids went horseback riding and loved it...wanna go back.

Hi Jeanette---I don't know if you're into hiking, but we loved our day-hikes in the Tahoe area. There are hiking trails at the top of Heavenly, but our favorite hike was on the southwest side of the lake (near Emerald Island). The hike was to Eagle Lake, a beautiful little lake surrounded by mountains. It was a wonderful hike with a beautiful reward at the end. Most of our Tahoe pix were of that particular hike!! Ask a park ranger about Eagle lake hike, I'm sure they can help you.
Enjoy the area!! P.S. If you like fruit smoothies, there's a great little natural foods restaurant on the main drag (the name escapes me)....in South Lake Tahoe. We ate something there everyday!!

One thing I really enjoyed at a stay at Lake Tahoe, was the Ponderosa, yup from the show Bonanza, which was shot in the area. The house and the "town" can be a fun tour. You will be surprised at the size of the "house" and you can see how some of the show was filmed, the walls and such actually move to accomodate the cameras.
We also took a couple of tours of the lake and did alot of hiking.
Enjoy.

Thanks everyone for such good ideas as now I am really getting excited about the trip. The champagne cruise and the hike are both on the "for sure" list. I love to swim and heard it's real cold but I'll be in there anyway. Most trips I have gone on in the last five years are very planned. This one is all happening last minute and seems like it fell out of heaven. I'm going to San Francisco in October too, so feel like this is too lucky to be true. Only had about a 2 week window of opportunity and that's when my daughter was going to have her first baby- so I wrote the whole possibility off and guess what-
HIMSELF has arrived a month early. Small but feisty. Two weeks old and all are doing well so we're out of here. Lake Tahoe - here we come.
