Key West tips needed

I will be going to Key West June 2-7 with 5 of my girlfriends for a wedding. We are in our mid 20's and like to have fun!! We will be staying at the Hyatt Windward Pt near the airport.

I'm hoping that someone can give me some tips about getting around (i.e. bikes vs. shuttle, taxi's or walking). I am worried that since we are near the airport, not many things will be within walking distance.

We would also like to know some great things to do, best places to eat, and go out. We will be snorkeling one afternoon. The wedding is Sat. evening, so I would like to know the best things to do to fill in the rest of our time, hopefully, without breaking the bank.

During the day it would be a nice bike ride from the Hyatt to Old Town. I probably wouldn't want to do it at night though. Cabs are plentiful, but can get expensive.

Old Town Key West is a great walking town. Even the cemetary is fun to wander through. Lots of interesting epitaphs and history to be found there.

Also great conch and Behamian architecture to admire.

Loads of bars and restaurants to stop at when you're tired of wandering. Make sure and head down to the docks, lots of fun bars there as well as on Duval.

Hemingway House is a fun tour, if you're at all interested. I've read nice things about the butterfly house, but haven't been there.

Do a search on this board to get "loads" of information on Key West.

You need to go to Mallory Square for at least one sunset celebrations. Its lots of fun. Duval street is loaded with bars and good time.

Staying out by the airport does but you out of the action which is mostly in Old Town. But cabs are plentiful.

Have fun.

Even though it's very touristy, I recommend the Conch Tour Train to get a feel for the island, its size, where things are, etc. You are correct that you'll be far from Old Town out by the airport. Do the Tour Train and then you can just concentrate on Old Town.

I went with my wife and another couple (in our late 20's) a few years ago. Had a great time. We stayed at 1800 Atlantic, which is just down the road from you. We normally drove or took a taxi downtown, though one time we took a bus back home - worked pretty well and it was cheap.

Here's what we did while there: parasailing off Smathers Beach, booze cruise/snorking trip (which was at sunset), rented a small boat for a day (which was fantastic - we circled the island, snorkeled, and eventually pulled up onto a sandbar and hung out in some tide pools), wandered up and down duvall hitting the bars and restaurants, and spending time by our pool. Our friends also went fishing on a charter. It was a great trip and we are actually going to do it again this July. This time we are staying closer to Duvall, but we didn't regret our location during the last trip. Have fun!

Thanks for all the tips so far! I'm really looking forward to the trip.

How early do you recommend going to watch the sunset at Mallory square and where is a good place to watch?

Hello: We have been to Key West three times, and we are going back for a fourth time in July! We love it. In regards to dining, The Meteor Smokehouse, Schooner Wharf, and Abondanzza are good eats for the price (BBQ, Burgers (American), and Italian, respectively). For snorkeling, Java Cat provides a good tour. Tell him to take you to "blue water". For nightlife, try the Green Parrot and of course, Sloppy Joe's. For Mallory Square, most hotels will post when the sun will set, so you want to get there at least an hour ahead of time. For an overall view of the island, the Conch Train Tour is a must. Have a great time!

Blue Heaven, breakfast or dinner. Terrific food, al fresco dining under a huge oak. Great Key West atmosphere and my all time favorite on the island.

My favorite places to eat were Blue Heaven, Alices, and Louies Backyard(eat out on the deck overlooking the water.)
