key west
Message: We're coming down to key west in feb for a wedding and rented a house, about 4-6 blks from duval street, for a week. it will be a family event and there will be a few kids, from 2yrs to 11yrs old. my question is are we making a mistake staying in key west for the whole week and is is ok for the kids too? i'm starting to hear bad things about key west , gays, beggars ,etc. people in general don't bother us but is this place safe? thanks for any info and also is there enough for a family of 3 to do for a week there without getting riped off? thanks for any info

I don't get your reference to gays and beggars and then quesioning safety. Are you afraid your 2 or 11 year old will be molested by a gay? They're probably safer there than in your church judging by the general state of things today. Afraid the beggars actually rape and murder instead of just ask for spare change? Key West is very, very safe. It might be nice to expose the kids to other life styles, but frankly, I doubt they will notice. They are probably much more open than most adults. And yes, there is plenty to do.

Hi Randy, I havent been in a few years... but Keywest itself..is beautiful...there are boat tours...and of course siteseeing.. but to be honest.. not sure if a week is a bit long for the whole family...I am sure you will get some other responses that are bit more current than mine.. I lived im Miami in the late 80s..went to the Keys and had a WONDERFUL time.
There is a very large gay community yes, if that bothers yall..you may want to rearrange your plans.
You can always drive back up the bridge and see parts of Miami as well. You do know there is only one way in and the same way out right? Its one LONG Bridge.
I cant give you an educated answer concerning the "bad things" you have heard but thought I would be honest with my opinions.
Am sure since you just posted this tonite you will get other replies too.
Have a good time in any event

I'm a grandmother who has been going to Key West for years. I think it's a wonderful place for people of ALL ages and can't imagine anything more fun for children then the sunset celebrations. If you just stay in the tourist areas and avoid Bahama Village after dark you won't have any trouble whatsoever. The Key West Citizen runs stories on "crime" and they usually consist of someone having too much to drink and losing his/her way home. Key West is a very low crime area.

Hello, first off I have no problem with gays or homeless people in general as long as they don't pester me. there's nothing worse than going on a vacation and getting bothered constantly for money or whatever, i had this in the bahamas, won't go back there. i will do more research on things to do there, so i would like to thank everyone for their replies.
