We stayed at Kauai Coast at Beachboy in Kapa'a --
http://www.resortime.com/resorts/pho...p?resortid=105
They were absolutely gorgeous. We loved Kapa'a (and Bubba Burgers!) but it's not like you stay there the whole time. Kauai is an island for exploring! Just don't miss taking a helicopter ride whatever you do!

I'2,
...and Clarence Carter is a vague reference to...?
geezer,
Have you found anything yet? This rental agency has a great reputation on the island. They have condo listing all over the island.

I've just finished booking June lodgings for both Kauai and Maui. We went to Kauai last year and loved it so much that we are returning within the year (something I never do). I agree very much with the posting by Songdoc. Although we stayed in Poipu, we ended up driving to the north shore almost daily. We stayed at Kiahuna Plantation in a Deluxe Garden View and were very pleased with the property. Overall, though, I think Poipu's beaches are too similar to Florida's for my taste. And it's an extra drive (down a beautiful tree-lined hwy) to get out of the Poipu area. We ended up using the beach at Kiahuna Plantation for surfing, but drove to the north shore almost daily for great snorkeling and just plain beautiful vistas and beaches. I highly recommend getting a condo to save money on eating out. This trip we're booking all of our lodgings through VRBO because we like the idea of being able to see the unit we're getting. There's a wide range of prices for the units - just watch out for the cleaning fees - they sometimes add on as much as $100, regardless of the length of stay. I'll let you know if we're not happy with the experience after we return. Good luck! BTW, make sure to get off the beaten path and do some hiking around Waimea Canyon (awesome) and stop at the Shrimp Shack on the way (I think that's the name). If you're heading towards the Canyon, it'll be on your left. Also, if you're interested, contact the Sierra Club in Kauai. We hooked up with the local members for two separate hikes which took us to places we wouldn't have found otherwise.

Try Marc Resorts with an entertainment card for an ocean front at Pali Ke Kua on the North Shore. Even if it states one bedroom, it could likely also have a loft with a sleeping quarters. If you can't get that, find a friend with an RCI account and buy a bonus week at Pahio at Keo Kai for around $1100 per week for a two bedroom condo. I've been going to Kauai for 20 plus years, just got back from a week there and Maui. I vote for North Shore all the way for hiking, best beaches and great sunsets. The Princeville Hotel is a great splurge for a night or two and is well worth it. Stay clear of Hanalei Bay Resort or the cheaper lodgings in Kapaa, you'll be disappointed in those. There are also some privately rented out condos in Princeville that look worthwhile but don't pick the Sandpiper for short term rental lodging. I'll send the link if I can find it for the other lodging I had been considering.
PS I've stayed at Pahio and Pali Ke Kua many times and am never disappointed, so long as you don't miss having a concierge.

Heres the link to Princeville Plantation Rental...photos look great.
Princeville is on the North Shore (very close to Hanalei) and is on 27 hole golf course. I've not rented from here, but these are very new condos that sell for $700,000 plus. I don't think you'd be disappointed at one of these.....probably not going to have an ocean view though. Here's the link...it says $980 per week...

Poipu Waihai is very nice, but you'll want North Shore for the great hiking at the Kee' Beach end of the road trail. Best of luck! Also try Sleeping Giant hike in Kapaa.
I suggest both of those great hikes!

We picked Popui Shores Condo on south shore in the summer because the waves are in that time of the year and this place has a pool right on the water.

<i know the perfect place for you, have been there 4 times... it is the halelani bed and breakfast... great price and value, not on the beach but a great respite when you return from a day on the beach or exploring....rent a jeep with the money you will save by staying at the halelani... and go all over the island 4 wheeling! Ruth and Sandy who own the halelani are wonderful and very accomodating and helpful if you want them to arrange any thing for you, like the hydralite or snorkeling or diving, etc... they deliver breakfast to your room each morningin a little cooler, and it is always delicious. all their rooms are nice ones, there is one private cottage on the property too that both couples could stay in together, have a private lawn and hot tub, and a nice kitchen.. good luck.

Another recommendation for Wailua Bay View condos. They also have washers/dryers there, if you are planning to hike Kauai, you will get dirty. We found having our own washer/dryer was really nice so we didn't have to bring back our muddy swamp hike clothes! The central location is also really nice, you can get south or north easily.

My husband & I got married on Kauai and after MUCH research chose the Poipu Kai condos on the south shore for us & our 11 guests. Everyone was thrilled with their accommodations, which ranged from air-conditioned studio to a three-bedroom. We rented through Suite Paradise - www.suite-paradise.com - and got an awesome deal on an ocean-view one bedroom with rental car. It's close to the gorgeous Hyatt, has a couple of pools, and is within walking distance of a few small beaches. We especially loved the convenience of a fully-equipped kitchen - nice for breakfasts & having the others over. I'm sure you'll be more than comfortable in one of the two-bedrooms. Have fun!

Hi,
I went last year to Kauai with my family and stayed at Kuhio Shores. Privately owned condos right on the water. They have 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom condos available. Only a minute or two drive from Sprouting Horn in Poipu. Check http://www.kuhio-shores.com for availability on various units.

I booked my trip and hotel through Hawaiian Airlines. I tried various other websites and by booking as a package deal, including the car rental, Hawaiian Airlines had the best deal! They offer a "suggested" hotel, but allow you to upgrade from there. Before you book, go to tripadvisor.com to check out reviews on the hotel or condo. It sure helped me make better decisions for my trip.

Mousegeezer,
Since you are interested in hiking,
if you go to Waimea Canyon (which is a must see), while in Koke'e, see if you can get a good map to the Po'omau Canyon Vista. We hiked there using Kauai Revealed and thought it was well worth it (see Po'omau Canyon Ditch Trail). The only drawback was that we had a difficult time following the trail which was at times poorly marked. That said, when we got to our destination, we were able to walk out on a finger-like projection that stuck out into the canyon. To our left in the distance was a 3-tiered waterfall, and all around were these beautiful white long-tailed birds soaring through the canyon (can't remember their name at the moment). We enjoyed this vista all by ourselves and saw almost no other people on this whole 3 - 4 hour hike. Great way to experience Waimea Canyon.

Me, my husband, and our 3 teenage kids stayed in a 2 bedroom oceanfront condo at Outrigger Lae Nani in Kappa two years ago this August. It was 299 a week. The condo was lovely and very clean. The view was absolutely breathtaking. The pool was really nice with palm trees all around it and it was never crowded. Most of the time we were the only ones in it. The traffic in Kappa can be very congested though. That was the only frustrating part. Hope this was helpful
