Kauai Accomodations
Hi,
We are planning to spend a week of our honeymoon in Kauai in October. For accomodations, we have narrowed our choice down to the Sheraton Kauai Resort,
Kiahuna Plantation and the Outrigger Kauia Beach. Any advice or comments on these would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

The best and first class choice would be the Sheraton Kauai beach resort, if you are speaking of the one in Princeville on Kauai. Outstanding Hotel and grounds, views, restaurants & rooms. The Outrigger is okay, but not as nice. I am not familiar with the other one you mentioned, there is a Kilahana Plantation, but it is a restaurant and gardens only, not a Hotel, unless there is another one I do not know about. If you stay at the Sheraton Kauai in Princeville, you will not be disappointed, but it is costly. Aloha & enjoy your stay on Kauai.

There are 2 Sheraton Hotels on Kauai. The Princeville Hotel, a Sheraton, is generally known by that name and is on the North shore, the more expensive of the 2 hotels. The other Sheraton is located in the Poipu area on the South shore, and just recently reopened after damages from Iniki 5 years ago. It has been extensively renovated so should be nice. I go to Kauai every and stay on the south shore. I haven'y stayed at the Sheraton there since it reopened but had breakfast there one day last year and it was very nice. The location is directly on the beach and I have been to the beach there and it is very nice, sandy bottom and not too large waves. Nice swimming beach.
There is a Kiahuana Plantation condo resort that is right next door to the south shore Sheraton hotel. In fact their beachfront condos share the same beach. The Kiahuna is a nice area and has very nice grounds and a great Italian restaurant on site called Piati. I have never been inside the condo units but from the looks of the property, I would say they are very nice. Just ask to get into a unit close to the water and beach because the property is large and has many buildings, not all on or near the water. None are that far away but why not get the water view if you can. Unless you like the services of a hotel, why spend the money and have to eat at a restaurant every meal. Example: our breakfast at the Sharaton last year for 2 people was about $25.00. The breakfast buffet ran 17.00 per person. Pretty spendy. The advantages of a condo are many including washer/dryer, full kitchen so you can store snacks and make tropical cocktails etc.. Also you will have so much more room in a condo unit. Probably not daily maid service but its a great trade off to have more privacy and the ability to eat at home when you tire of restaurant food.
Whatever you choose, you will love Kauai. Also the weather on the south shore tends to be sunnier if that helps you to decide. The North shore is more tropical, but it is that way for a reason- more rain.

Hi Dan, i know you said you had already narrowed your choices but I beg you to reconsider. Having stayed at the Princeville and the Marriott, I can truly say that without a doubt the best hotel for honeymooners is the hyatt at Poipu Bay. If you can swing it, I would strongly suggest staying there. It is like heaven on earth. A half acre pool, four or five excellent restaiurants... you never have to leave the resort. Of course, when you do leave it is much more conveniently located to visist the sights than the Princeville. Your very close to the Sprouting Horn, Fern Grotto and Waimea Canyon.. Please consider the Hyatt.

I second Dan's suggestion of the Hyatt at Poipu. We chose the Hyatt because my husband and I wanted to start off our honeymoon in a beautiful and romantic resort. One thing to keep in mind is that the northern part of the island tends to rain more. Congratulations!

In April, I have stayed at both the Hyatt and the Sheraton. The Hyatt is the more luxurious property. It has beautiful rooms, the Club floor is fantastic--it is a deluxe hotel. The Sheraton is a nice first class hotel. It is on a swimmable beach. But be certain that you look into the room categories. The ocean and beach side of the hotel are new buildings from after the hurricane on the ocean side. The garden side of the hotel is across a road and was updated after the hurricane--those rooms are smaller. Both properties have web sites. Of the two, I prefer the Hyatt. Both properties have specials and accept the buy one get one night found in American Airlines frequent flyer tickets. If you want to save a few dollars, consider the Embassy Suites property at Poipu. They are have full kitchen including washer driers--expanded continental breakfasts and evening coctails. They also accept Entertainment/Encore half price discount cards during certain periods (makes ocean View abour $175 for a one bedroom with sofa bed that would easily sleep 4). We love Kauai and return at least once per year. Good luck.
