Interstate through Salt Lake City
Last year, and in 1999, I was in Salt Lake City overnight. I found that the Interstate highways were in a high state of reconstruction. As a result, there were detours because interchanges were under construction.
Does anybody have a report on the current situation?

We were in UT in Sept. 00, and are headed back in May. The construction was a major pain- especially headed north on US 15 headed into SLC. The entire north lanes ground to a virtual halt-- on a Saturday, no less-- leaving us to divert to side roads to get to the airport. It was an unsettling end to what was an otherwise wonderful trip. We're weighing in whether or not to fly into LAS or SLC for this trip. I plan to take a hard look at this road construction site, and if it's too hairy around the airport, we may route out of LAS. Good luck in your planning.

Good News...finally at long last the freeway reconstruction on I-15 thru the SLC valley is almost finished. The folks at UDOT have informed me that everything will be completed by June 1.or sooner.Ostensibly, it is complete now, with no major delays...It has been a pain in the arse driveing around here the last few years..but over the last several months they have reopened most of the freeway and traveling thru here is no problem now..Also, I was just at the airport in SLC this morning and the traffic to and from the airport in now a non event..

Thanks for the update. We will be flying both in and out of SLC in a few weeks. In 1999 we never were lost, but finding the route because of a detour or a blocked exit was sometimes challenging.
Fortunately the grid like layout of the city's streets makes find your way a lot easier than some places, like Paris or London!!! Or, Washington DC where I lived for 11 years.

It has been several months since this question was posted, but in just in case anyone else is curious about the I-15 reconstruction, It is finished.
Every square inch of I-15 (including over 150 bridges) was completely re-constructed in under 4 1/2 years. The company that did the work is now moving to Denver to re-build I-25.
