Hi, I live near Portland, thought I'd try and help.
The Shilo Inn by the Portland airport is nice. in the same area, there is a Days Inn, a Shearton and a few other hotels. For things to do. go down the Columbia gorge. this is a very pretty drive. stop at Multnomah Falls. take the senic highway, the road is narrow, but the views are terrific. in the city itself, there is the rose gardens, roses won't be in bloom, but the garden has a wonderful view of Mt. Hood. there is the zoo, and OMSI. and of course, shopping. the coast is only about 3 hours away, maybe 5. Have a great trip. Portland is beautiful.

carol -- for 2 different, wonderful and unusual lodging experiences, consider 1."the kennedy school" -- it's an old grade school made into a bed and breakfast -- you'll be spending the night in an old classroom -- there's a "gym," a wonderful restaurant in the old "cafeteria", a small lap pool, a movie theatre in the old auditorium, (i think) and a brewery -- 2."the edgefield" -- similar to the kennedy school, except this place used to be the old county poor farm -- there are several pubs on the property -- usually live music on the weekends -- fabulous art throughout the hallways -- movies are shown for a $1 -- beautiful gardens -- both places are run by the same 2 brothers, as well as an additional 30 or so more pubs, but these are the only bed and breakfasts -- you'll love it, if you're into something a little bit different and unusual -- you can learn more about both places at: http://www.mcmenamins.com -- have a grand time here in the rose city -- september is a wonderful time weatherwise to visit!!......gloria

Where to stay in Portland:
- Riverplace Hotel, right on the Willamette River, conveniently located, great views, lovely place, good service.
To Do in Portland:
- Ride the Trolley up the Willamette
- Visit the Portland Rose Test Gardens (wonderful!)
- The Zoo in Portland is quite wonderful!
- I enjoyed dining at Atwaters because of the magnificent view for the 24th floor (or so) restaurant.
- A drive up the Columbia River Gorge is most rewarding. Stop and see the waterfalls!

Carol,
Sept is a wonderful time to be in Portland. It is usually warm and dry, however, you should always be prepared for rain when it comes to visiting Portland.
McMenemins Edgefield is a fun place to stay and to visit. The lodging is european style (meaning you share a common bathroom, just in case you're not into that.)
The Riverplace is a great place to stay. I think it is the nicest hotel downtown. However it's quite expensive. The rooms are beautiful and the service is excellent. It's located on the Willamette River in a nice, trendy area with lots of shops and places to eat.
I highly recommend the hotel restaurant Esplanade.
Activities:
Definitely visit the Columbia Gorge area...drive the Old Highway so that you can visit the observatory and some of the other beautiful waterfalls. If you take the Multnomah Falls exit off HWY 84, you will only have access the Multnomah Falls, which is worth seeing, but there are so many more great waterfalls to see along the Old Hwy.
The Japanese Garden in Washington Park is worth visiting if your into that sort of thing. While you're up there you can check out the Rose Garden. Although it won't be in bloom, the views of Portland, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens are spectacular.
If you're here on a Saturday, there is a Saturday market that I really enjoy visiting. It's located along Front Avenue in downtown Portland under the Morrison Bridge (I think?), across from Waterfront Park.
If you're looking for a good website on Portland, I've found www.citysearch.com to be useful for restaurant info and events.
Hope this is helpful. Enjoy your visit.
