I don't think many people know what to wear anywhere anymore. I'm tired of men wearing their hats in restaurants, for example. Everywhere, exposed flesh that shouldn't be, stretch material in strange colors that is taxed beyond its capabilities, and the reverse--I've been to live theater and seen ladies wearing ball gowns with their escorts wearing business suits or just sport jackets ("I'm going to wear this strapless thing once more before I die?"), and of course they are next to the folks in sandals and blue jeans. There is no common ground, and men in particular have embraced "comfort casual" over a tie. (Oh well--I still don't wear white shoes after their time...probably never will. But I'm beginning to think that cowboy boots, depending on polish and heel type, will go with anything!!)

DC75 so it must be all tacky Americans in the stands at the English and other European football games wearing those "oversize baseball caps"? Gee, and everyone thinks that soccer is not popular in the USA....

Don't all amercian's dress up in white trainers, walmart jeans and tacky sweaters? Living in Europe we see many visitors from across the water dressed in this way. Makes them easy to spot I suppose! Oh I forgot about the oversize baseball caps!

It's possible that you're only identifying those traveling Americans that are your equals. You seem to have problems with spelling, with capitalizing and with correct usage of the "s" in your plural there, DC75.

sylvia, cowboy boots definitely go with anything, at least this season, if you want to go by what I saw in Paris.

We recently had a reverse What Not To Wear episode. Sophisticated cousin from Manhattan visiting. We're going out to see the elk at Pt. Reyes National Seashore, which is often overcast and windy. We're in jeans and fleece jackets or windbreakers. Cousin comes downstairs dressed in black pants, expensive pink tank top, white linen jacket, straw hat, designer sunglasses, designer purse. I'm afraid I hurt her feelings when I burst out laughing, but it couldn't have been funnier if she had appeared in a clown suit.

Pardon me for my poor grammar fehgeddaboudit. I had not realised this forum required correct punctuation. By the way in the English dictionary - 'capitalizing' is spelled with an 's'.

Curt I see you must be a Manchester United fan, I hear the fans are following the dress sense of the clubs new owner, none other than oversize baseball cap wearing Malcolm Glazer.

Excuse me now I am off to get on my Walmart jeans, white 'sneakers', kitten sweatshirt, my oversize cap and watch the football (soccer) on TV.

Omigoodness, I think I've just had my first personal experience with censorship! Is it possible I offended the editors with my post about my 'too much exposed flesh' experience in a restaurant (and Curt's subsequent response re a tattoo)? That little exchange seems to have disappeared. Well, so as not to offend anyone's delicate sensibilities, I will henceforth replace the offending word with 'aardvark' and the piece of underwear (not) covering it with 'thang'. So, as the story went, I was offended because a woman wearing low cut jeans and a thang had her aardvark in my face in a restaurant.

Perhaps with all the new changes to the Fodors website, they could offer us a list of acceptable and non-acceptable words that we grown-ups are allowed to use here. And their international counterparts. For example, arse seems to be acceptable while (aardvark) is not.
