How to get from Hartford to Riverdale (New Jersey)

Hi there, I have never been to the States before and I need to go to two different places, so I'm a bit lost!:

1) I have to attend a conference in Hartord. Im flying to Newak airport, so I thought the best way to get to Hartford would be with Amtrack trains. Is that right?

2) After the conference I have to go Riverdale (New Jersey).I have been doing some research, and it looks like a possible way to do it would be taking the Amtrak train from Hartford to Newark and then from there get the 75 bus to Riverdale. Is this right? Anyone has a better suggestion? I would really appreciate your help!

Your plan sounds ok, if you don't want to rent a car (traffic can be terrible on the route between New Jersey and Hartford). Otherwise you could take a bus which might be less expensive but not as comfortable a ride. Look for the trains with the fewest stops and changes on your route.

I think a bus service all the way, both ways would probably work out easier and cheaper.

-Airport bus from straight from Newark Airport to NY Port Authority (PA) Depot http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.asp ($15, departs every 15min)
-Greyhound bus from NY PA to Hartford. Hourly departures, 2.5hr ride, ~$25 each way. www.greyhound.com

Return
- Bus Hartford back to NY PA
- NJ transit bus 194 to Riverdale

Many thanks for the information, its really helpful!

I go to Riverdale because I have a friend of the family over there but my intentions are to go to NY every day for 3 days so i can see a little bit of the amazing city. Would that bee too hasly/expensive, do you reckon it would be better to just stay in a cheap accommodation in NY?

Finally, is there any bus/train that goes from Riverdale to Newark airport?

Sorry for so many questions but i go on my own and im bit scared!!!

Thanks!

Riverdale area is suburban New Jersey - there are a lot of people who commute daily to/from NYC using the bus.

It'll take about 1hr if you take an express bus, or longer if you're on one of the non-commute hours buses that stop at more places enroute. That's the time on the bus from Riverdale (not sure where the bus stops there) to Port Authority Bus Depot. Add on time to get from your friend's house to the bus, wait for the bus, then on the other end getting to points of interest in NYC factor in ~2hrs door to door both ways.

If your desire is to see NYC for a few days then my recommendation would be to stay in NYC. Cheap accommodation is relative - what is your budget. If you're willing to commute 2hrs each way daily then it says you don't need an expensive hotel right in the middle of the action in Times Square. There are lots of helpful people here on Fodors who can give you tips on finding a hotel in NYC. I suggest you start another posting "Hotel in NYC" and give specifics about your budget.

You could easily visit the family friend on your last day, stay overnight with them, then get to Newark airport for your departure. If you were visiting me I'd simply drive you to Newark airport (if I still lived in NJ). My suggestion is to call up your friends or email them and see what they suggest about getting to the airport.

I would NOT necessarily take their advice about staying with them for 3d and commuting to NYC. Every gracious host wants to make their guests feel welcome at their home. But, getting to/from the bus daily will require their help driving you to the bus stop. They may not have a good feel for the daily hassle. Their intentions may be good but they may also not be well informed of the hassle for you and any of the important details you'll need to know.

Aside from commuters bus/train use in suburban US areas like NJ isn't very common - everybody uses cars. I'm willing to bet your friends many never have used the train or bus themselves, unless they go to NYC daily.

Big cities can be intimidating - I've always found people in/around NYC to be very helpful. Ask away, here on Fodors and certainly when you arrive and need to find things.

Wow!! I have no words, you have been extremely helpful!!! I think im going to take your advice on this, stay in NYC for two nights and then go visit them the day before I leave. And as you said i will post a new ad with regards to the hotel.

Again, many thanks for taking the time to reply and to give me such an amazing answer!
