How many cities are "The City"?

Replies to the question about lodging in SF have me wondering. So far we've got SF, LA, and NYC as contenders for being THE "The City." Are there others?

PS Did anyone else watch "The Tick," which was set in "The City"? At one point our hero looks out and says, "Ah, The City. My The City."

In the Washington, D.C., area, I think most people don't call it "The City." We call it "The District."

Guess that makes us special, huh?

When I lived in New Jersey "The City" was Manhattan.
When I lived in Bellvue ,Washington "The City" was Seattle.
Now I am in Evanston, Illinois and when people say "The City" it is Chicago.
All depends where you are at the time.

I don't ever remember anyone refering to LA as "the city" while I was there ,as in "I'm going to THE CITY." The sentiment seemed to be that it really didn't exist anywhere or that it was everywhere. It wasn't a "place" that you went to.

When I grew up in Farmersville, Ohio, we always called Dayton, "the city". I suspect that every country type person always referred to the nearest large town as "the city." It's time you people in LA, SF, and NYC get over yourselves and stop thinking the world starts and ends with you.
