My husband, his best friend and I will be traveling to Oahu in October to pick up a cruise. We will be staying in Honolulu for 3 nights before the cruise to see a concert and do some "touristy" things. Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent, moderately priced hotel? Waikiki's big hotels are just too expensive at $250-300 a night!!

My 30 something daughter and husband stayed at the Ohana Maile Sky Court in July. It's located a few blocks from the beach, along the canal.... but they didn't have any complaints about the accommodations.

I like the Hawaiiana Hotel and The Breakers on BeachWalk.

Here's a couple of links for maps of Waikiki that show the location of most of the hotels. Besides those already mentioned many of the Ohana brand are centrally located in Waikiki. Resortquest has several offerings some have undergone refurbishing as have many of the Aqua Hotels. Some of the hotels are across the street or only a block from the beach.

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel...only 2 blocks from the beach, and you can usually get a discounted rate by booking online.

The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel

We have reservations at the New Otani for December. Last year when we stayed at the Hilton (would never stay there again), we had dinner at the New Otani's Banyon Tree restaurant and loved the location right on Waikiki Beach, but away from the crowds and we are paying $150 a night with breakfast.

Thre's not a pool at the New Otani, right? It comes well recommended from a co-worker, but for me a pool is a must-have in Waikiki.

tmt - what was wrong with the Hilton? (is there more than one?) We're seriously thinking about staying there in February.

I really like the location of the New Otani but definitely need a pool.

Furrs - don't know if you want to stay in the thick of Waikiki, but I got a rate of $185 at the Outrigger on the Beach (for February). It was the Entertainmentcard rate, so it's worth it to ask. That might still be too high for what you're looking for; I agree - Waikiki's hotels are priced way high. Good luck

Hotels everywhere have gotten pretty expensive, I think. Even in places that are otherwise inexpensive. I've always thought that our Hawaiian hotels were a pretty good deal for what you got though. For example, I've been in hotels in Seoul, Korea that were more expensive than our hotels here and didn't even have a lobby! And all of our hotels will be in short walking distance to the beach, many have views and balconies -- try finding something like that in Barcelona!

Even if you don't stay at the New Otani Kaimana Beach, you'd love the restaurant that was mentioned: the Hau Tree Lanai. It's casual, but right on the beach.

As of right now, there are still 2007 Entertainment books available for Hawaii, at only $9.99 plus shipping. This will get you approximately 50% off the rack rate at many hotels, plus lots of other discounts. The books expire November 1, but that works perfect for an October trip!
