Honeymoon in SF/Napa in early Sept. Any tips?

Hi everyone...I am planning my honeymoon right now for next year, and we are planning on 2 nights in Vegas, 5 in San Fran and 4 in Napa. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions for things to do? As far as lodging, I have heard the Bellagio in LV is good, the Argonaut in SF and the Candlelight Inn in Napa. ANY suggestions are welcome, as we are trying to plan the best trip possible. I have been to the west coast before, but my fiance has not. I also need help with planning what to see and do as well as places to eat (both formal and casual). Thanks!!!!

You might want to add some interests to help narrow things down (hiking, nightlife, scenic drives, theater??). What time of year? October?

Hi! I would suggest 2 days on the coast in Elk, Mendocino area. Skip Napa...it's touristy, overpriced, traffic is loud. Go to Healdsburg in Sonoma for a couple days. How about, 2 in Vegas, 4 in Redwoods area (maybe 2 places), 2 in Sonoma, 3in SF?

I agree that Napa is a litle touristy, but it is nice to see nonetheless, and that 5 nights in SF is too many for such a small city. I would suggest 2 nights in Napa, 2 nights in Sonoma, 4 nights in Las Vegas, and 3 nights in SF.

What time of year are you coming here? What type of honeymoon are you looking for--active, relaxing, sightseeing, adventure? What age range are you guys in?

Brunch: Momma's in North Beach! Great food, good prices ($9-$15 a plate).
Dinner: Gary Danko's, Fifth Floor, Slanted Door, Boulevard.

Take your fiance (or spouse by then) to Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge.

Look for April's post about the Argonaut--she seemed to love it and it seems like it may be the best thing to happen to the Wharf (the hotel is new--I haven't seen it yet but it appears not to be the typical "Wharf" hotel).

obxgirl--my thoughts exactly!!

I couldn't agree with obxgirl more and toatlly disagree with the posters who are suggesting less time in San Francisco. Do what you want, but if it were my honeymoon I would skip Vegas, fly to S.F., spend a night or two get a car, drive to Carmel and stay at the Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach for a night or two and then spend 2 or 3 nights at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, back to the city for 2 or more nights. Maybe try to get a reservation at The French Laundry in Yountville and stay the night.

More time in Las Vegas (for a honeymoon?) and less in SF/Napa?

Wow.
That's like recommending less time at Nordstrom in favor of WalMart, or more meals at McDonald's.

There are so many more romantic things to do in the Bay Area and surroundings than in Las Vegas.

I think several days in SF is great. Jwer has a great division of time, with 2 in Vegas and 5/4 in SF/Napa.

jwer04: be very careful who you listen to -- especially for a honeymoon, which I assume you want to be really special. FYI Lake, Guarto and Treck are the same person and he makes a point of slamming SF and giving folks really, REALLY weird advice. He has been kicked off by the Fodors editors many times - but apparently they have given up because Treck/Guarto/Lake have been left on for about 4 days.

If you have any question about this - just click on any of the names who have responded - that will give you their posting histories.

IMHO - to play a mean trick like this on someone planning their honeymoon just show what a sick puppy this guy is . . . . .

Your plan of 2 days LV, 5 days SF, and 4 days Napa is pretty good. If it were me I'd probably drop Las Vegas, but if you want to see it, 2 days is about right.

jwer, I'm going to ask my brother to email me the itinerary he had for SF for his honeymoon since he was there for the same amount of time you had planned. When he emails me his trip report, I'll post it here for you.

We recently spent 3 nights in SF and felt it was enough time although 1or 2 more would have been less hectic. A suggestion for the wine country - we spent 2 nights in Yountville and 3 nights in Sonoma (Vintners Inn) and wished we had stayed at the Vintners Inn for all 5. It was too much packing and unpacking and the Vintners was a wonderful, centrally located Inn that would be perfect for a honeymoon.

Oh good lord.... Poor jwer! To get caught up in this nuttiness for an innocent itinerary question. jwer, your original itinerary schedule will be fine. The trio "Lake"/"Treck"/"Guarto" are indeed the same unhinged person with an anti-SF agenda. He/she just doesn't like The City. There will be plenty to do in San Francisco and the surrounding area over 5 days. Check out Fodors' destination guide on SF-- lots to do, isn't there? It's geographically dense, like NYC, and a lot is packed into the area. I'm a big Nob Hill fan for special trips-- the Fairmont or the Mark Hopkins Inter-Continental are fantastic hotels.

In Vegas, Bellagio is a great choice, as is the Venetian or Mandalay Bay. If you want Desperately Hip, the Palms, which is off the Strip, would be a pretty good choice as well. VERY off the Strip, but quite plush (I stayed there on business), is the JW Marriott resort in (I think) Summerlin. Congratulations on the impending nuptials!

Guarto, Lake and treck, are, for the record, all the same person. I'm posting this so that anyone who cares can compare my history of posts to this loonybird's and thereby decide who is more credible. It infuriates me that one crazy can hijack thread after thread--Fodor's, where are you?? Delete this nutjob, already!

Vegas is so out of the way from Napa and SF, maybe you want to spend 2 nights at South Tahoe, it has the same casinos but much more romantic then Vegas. You can save Vegas for a separate trip and combine it with the canyons.

San Jose for a honeymoon? Which person in the right mind would even suggest that?

For new and trendy in LV, check out THE hotel at Mandalay Bay... brand new tower being promoted as a separate hotel. Opening later this year. Should be nice. NOt much info on their site but there is some...

I would skip napa and sonoma and head to Healdsburg in the Dry Creek wine area. The Healdsburg Hotel is wonderful......the rooms so simple but beautiful. We've actually redone a bathroom and bedroom to match their decor. And their beds are the best to............rest on. They have a spa and pool on site.

Eat at Zin for lunch and Madrone for dinner. The town is centered on a square and it is the perfect size town and wine area for a honeymoon. Email me if you wish for more info. I've lived in the SF area for over 25 years and can't get enough of this beautiful area.
