How about the Palms Cliff House which is just north of Hilo? http://www.palmscliffhouse.com/ It is a lovely place though pricy. If you would provide a price range and give us some idea of what you like--hotel, b&b--I'm sure you'll get some other suggestions.

We stayed at the Waterfalls Inn (google it for website) during our honeymoon and thought it was lovely. Didn't mind the drive to VNP at all. Stayed there two nights to explore VNP and that side of the island, then moved over to the Kohala (sp?) coast for the rest of our Big Island stay.

Aloha,
I like staying in Volcano Village when I am Hilo side. Hilo is a tad tired and Volcano Village is darling. You can get into Hilo in under 30 mins.
Nice B&B is My Island B&B. There are also little affordable houses you could rent.

We really enjoyed our stay in Hilo .... not that touristy like Kona. Stayed at the Castle Hio Hawaiian..bay view, economical and good location. Also stayed at the Volcano House .. a good place to stay if you want to hike in the park or do a day hike to the Green Sand Beach.
