Help with an iterary from Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole
I am travelling with my husband and young sons in August,
flying into Salt Lake City and travelling to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Does anyone know an interesting and fun route to travel?

We've done this trip and we just went on the main highway ( believe it's I-15) that goes by idaho. The scenery is incredible and you pass little towns on the way. We didn't stop because we were too excited to get to JH. However, we were planning this trip again for this year (got pushed back because we decided to get married instead in yosemite) but I found out that crater of the moon national park is not far from that route just a slight detour to 26 or 20 to Arco Idaho. The national parks service had it on it's magazine this past year (why I looked it up) and it looks really cool. I'm definitely putting that on the schedule when we do reschedule the trip.

Stay off the Interstate if in no hurry. Take US-89 out of Logan thru Afton - Alpine Jct and on into Jackson. Nice Motel in Afton on the right, top side of town. Made out of old logs, rustic as well as modern. We have stayed there several times. They serve coffee out back the office on the picnic table in the morning, weather permitting. Its a no smoking place, no kidding. They may come out from behind the counter to get a little closer to smell. I had to laugh when this happened to us. We had broken camp that morning in Yellowstone and I am sure we smelled of smoke after the previous nights campfires...

Hi Elyse,
I agree with RedRock that going up through Logan, Logan Canyon and past Bear Lake and on through Star Valley is the most scenic. It's also the slowest. Maybe do it one way, whichever direction you are less rushed.
Have a great trip!

Jackie,
I would estimate it taking about an hour longer if you go through Logan Canyon and Bear Lake. Logan Canyon is one lane and the road gets steep and windy near the lake. RVs can really slow you down.
Also, small towns with very low speed limits along the west side of Bear Lake. Depends a lot on the day of the week you drive and if there is any road construction.

Travelling friends,
This is so helpful to me. Another question: if you had 6 nights for the trip and a husband who likes to stay put in luxury and a wife who is more adventurous,
what would you do: fly to Salt Lake and drive to the Tetons to spend all our time at Jackson Lake Lodge or would you fly direct to JH and spend a few nights there and a few nights at a more rustic place like Coulter Bay?

-- elyse the "wife who is more adventurous". To bad you cannot talk the DH into camping in the Yellowstone. There are some nice CG's, our favorite is Pebble Creek. We love the NE portion of the Park especially the Lamar Valley and the old mining town of Cooke City...

I've stayed at Colter Bay and it was a huge cabin. Very nice cabin too so you may talk him into it but I liked the JH idea and the tetons vs just staying at Jackson Lodge. The big draw of the place is outside really, not inside. Anyway, it sounds like he would enjoy JH. We had a really fantastic dinner at Snake River Grill there that you may want to try. Exceptional food and the town itself is fun.

I agree with cmcfong. You have to stop for a blueberry milkshake. On our way to Yellowstone one year, we stopped for one. It was snowing (this was the middle of May) and we were freezing but it was worth it! Can't remember the name of the little place at Bear Lake but hope to visit it on our next trip!
