Well I traveled by greyhound a few times in recent years no problems. It can be time consuming. They stop everywhere it seems. I dont know how long your trip is but if its less than 5 hours then ok. I dont know about greyhound in Florida. But in Pittsburgh its safe.

We see a few of the "dogs" once in a while. Most of the time on the older highways going thru the smaller towns. Check their schedule and see if it fits into your plans. It might work if you are in no hurry and want to see some of the state off the Interstate Highways.

Hello Halifax, is there any prisons along the way? I ask as my small city has two prisons.
When I moved here a neighbor asked if we could go to SF on the Greyhound Bus which has a station here. I felt unsure and talked to the Police Dept. They advised not to as when people are released from our prisons they are given a bit of money and a Greyhound Bus ticket. Who knew?? But of course living in Northern California I know nothing about the situation in Florida.

I'll report back as I'm taking the 'Hound from Miami to Key West in December, but in other states, While certainly generally not the cleanest of places and lacking in many cases good food options, I've never found the bus stations so horrific as some people believe them to be. Only once did I meet a guy (in Baton Rouge) who'd just been released from somewhere who struck me up in conversation. After a bit, he asked if I could help him out a bit financially (not in an aggressive or concerning way though).
In New Orleans and Boston, the bus & train station are roughly the same location and quite central; Boston's bus station almost shocked me, being the cleanest in the US I'd seen. In Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Philly PA, San Antonio & Laredo TX, New York City, Baltimore MD& Albany NY, all the stations are centrally-located, and not too far from some of each of those cities' major draws. (Baltimore's station was probably the diviest of the group.) Can't speak to Florida yet, but I'd be surprised if they were standouts in their terribleness.
With usual urban precautions (watch your bags, etc...), I can't imagine you won't be just fine.

Here's my favorite tip if you're traveling alone by bus. If it looks like the bus will be pretty full, try to board after about half of the other passengers have boarded. They will all choose window seats, so you won't get one. But you WILL get to choose who you sit with.
If you board early you'll get a window but you also might get a traveling partner who looks, acts, or smells offensive.
