Rave: Sandra Day O'Conner resigned from the US Supremes a few minutes ago. I can't wait to see the cat fight in the US Senate.

Rave: DIL got a rave review in the NY Times for her new Manhattan restaurant (202).

Rant: The USD continues its decline vs the MXPeso (10.56 @ the cambios this AM).

kcapuani, yes the Minnesota government shut down, Indefinately as far as I know. Fortunately the twits left the state parks open over the extended weekend. Lots of 16 year olds are ticked off because they can't get their driver's license test and drive now.

Rave: ahhnold and I aqree on something!!! I think this ruling is going to a hot button like we have never seen. Both liberals and conservatives see eye to eye on this one. We always hear about what our soilders fought and died for. Not having our land taken away from us is high on that list. A slap in the face.

PamSF Jul 1st, 2005 08:20 AM

Margot~Frank, the cat and I send our sympathies. I have lived through a similar ordeal twice in the past few years. It always seems so incredibly difficult to know when it is the best time. I hope the Jersey shore provides some respit.

Ok now for the R&Rs:

Rant: O'Connor retiring from the Supreme Court. Oh..I shudder to think about the nominee.

Rant: nasty posts here in Fodorville. I hope this week's R&R remains in place.
Perhaps we can convert Gekko:)

Rave: A weekend to catch up and to recline. We're into the garden tomorrow to get things a wee bit more organized. Sunday we head up to Healdsburg for 2 nights with an old, dear friend. It's an annual trip and always involves eating, drinking and gabbing a plenty.

Rant: Negotiations are going nowhere between the Nurses Association and Sutter. Strike vote probably next Thursday. Ugh..I hate these things.

Have a good weekend everyone.

ahhnold Jul 1st, 2005 08:21 AM

right on MikeMo. All they need is someone who will defend the constitution(ie: Robert Bork?), but they will want someone to interpret it to fit an agenda.

ahhnold Jul 1st, 2005 08:28 AM

huge Rave: Jorr, you and I agree more than you think. Politicians are always looking for ways to increase tax revenue without raising taxes and the Supreme Court gave them the right to do so. What ever happened to" This Land is My Land.....". Big city mayors are thrilled now becuase developers will put low income housing in areas and by-pass local zoning restrictions.

OneWanderingJew Jul 1st, 2005 08:45 AM

Yay, AHaugeto!!

(What's the deal w/Brooke Shields? Haven't watched TV lately tho I did catch the S Day OConnor mess

Rant: Just returned from vacation. At least I only had to work two days before a three day weekend for the 4th.

Rant: The heat. I had always traveled in the fall and early spring, but now with a kid in school that is changing. D.C. was soooooooo hot and humid last week, and I was born and lived most of my life in the South. Thank goodness for free museums with air conditioning.

Rave: Just like someone above - Gettysburg and Washington, D.C. I spent part of 6 days in DC and 5 in and around Gettysburg (3rd trip to both). The extra time (even with kids) gave me an opportunity to see both in more detail than on past trips.

Rave: Getting up early on vacation and going out alone for photography. There is nothing like early morning, especially in normally crowded locations to get the real feel of a place, be it the Gettysburg battlefield without crowds or Washington, D.C. as all the locals head out to another day of work.

Rave: Digital cameras. This was my first long trip since getting one. I found that I took so many more photos than before (and that was already a heck of a lot). It has improved my creativity by giving me immediate feedback when I experiment, and I don't have to worry about paying for unwanted prints of bad shots.

OWJ, Brooke and the wacky Tom Cruise have been duking it out over her admitting to taking prescription drugs to treat her post-partum depression. I quite frankly think it's none of his darned business.

cmcfong Jul 1st, 2005 08:57 AM

Margot, my sympathies. We lost our Wilbur (aka Willie) two years ago and still miss him.
Rave: www.petfinder.org Enter your preferred breed and zip code and the site will lead you to available rescues in your area. Can't beat it. We got our adorable Catie and equally adorable Rocket Dog via that site. As long as there are shelter dogs, adopt!

margot55 Jul 1st, 2005 09:04 AM

Rave: ((l)) Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your thoughtful expressions of sympathy for the passing of our dear Willie. It means more to me than words can say...

Rave: Red Bank (NJ) Veterinary Hospital - this is a 1st class animal hospital that is run so professionally and efficiently, and has a top-notch staff, top to bottom. I can't say enough about them...

Gekko Jul 1st, 2005 09:17 AM

Not again . . . editors, delete this non-travel inanity.

The terms of service are crystal clear -- the topic is travel.

viamar Jul 1st, 2005 09:30 AM

Rave: 3 day weekend for my husband! Looking forward to a great bbq w/ family and friends.
Rant: Fog, fog and more fog. If you are coming to the Monterey/Santa Cruz area for the 4th bring a sweatshirt.
Rave: Tourists w/ young kids so excited about being at the beach that they're playing in the ocean despite the chilly fog.
Rant: Tourists w/ or w/out young kids making the traffic horrible.

BTW, I never post on this thread but I enjoy reading it on Fridays. It is traval related because you can find out what other people are feeling and thinking across the country.

LoriNY Jul 1st, 2005 09:31 AM

One more Rave: Live 8 tomorrow and a reunited Pink Floyd!!!

jorr Jul 1st, 2005 09:39 AM

Another Rant: northern Minnesota has had unbievable amounts of rain in the past 26 months. If you have watched the weather maps on TV lately you have seen that there is usually a red blob over the upper mid-west. On Wednesday it was like War Of The Worlds. Our house was shaking and rumbling for hours. The electicity went off five times this week.

Rave: www.weatherunderground.com. You can watch Nexrad radar before the storms roll in.

CAPH52 Jul 1st, 2005 09:47 AM

Happy Canada Day to those celebrating!

Margot, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I really hope that you and your husband are able to relax and put it out of your mind for a few hours over the weekend. You've had so much worry these past few weeks. You need a break!

OWJ, great news from the dr. I have my fingers and toes crossed for you!

Scarlett, good luck with the house hunting!

P_M, so sorry to hear about your mother's accident. Hope the nerve damage turns out not to be as severe as you think. As you said, thank goodness it was her left wrist.

ethel, good luck with Hector. Hope things go as well as possible under the circumstances.

Cassandra, I'm wishing you nothing but raves next week!

bamakelly, congrats on the house!

AHaugeto, congratulations!!

seetheworld, good luck with the camping trip. Hope you and your family have a great time together.

And happy travels to all who are going somewhere this weekend!

I echo the concerns others have expressed about eminent domain and Sandra Day O'Connor.

And I want to second Tiff's thank you to Jorr for FF R&R!

Rave: We're on our way. The chemo seems to have already eradicated some of my husband's symptoms!

Rant: Low blood counts and fatigue. We still have a long, long ways to go.

Rave: My kids are at the Cubs/Nationals game together. So nice that they're old enough to do things like this together, just the two of them. And that they *want* to spend the time together.

Rant: Three parts. 1)The tickets were ordered for husband and son. My husband couldn't justify taking time for a ball game after missing so much lately for tests, chemo, etc. 2)As glad as I am that the kids are having this bonding experience, I'll feel a lot better when they're safely back home. Even though I know they're perfectly capable of getting to the game on the train and the el. 3)They still get in to some knock-down, drag-out arguments. I'm hoping one doesn't erupt today!

gomiki Jul 1st, 2005 09:58 AM

margot, I'm sorry.

AHaugeto, Congratulations!

Rant: I live in #6 most congested area (according to yesterday's report).

Rant: Today it feels like #1. Rain and gridlock.

Rave: I saw my first lightning bugs of the summer this week.

Rave: The residents of Fodorville.

Rave: Fourth of July and I love fireworks. If I want to brave the traffic I can see them four nights in a row:-D

Rave: America. Happy Fourth of July to all.
