Rant: Terrorism and the cowards who give them a safe haven.

Rant: Hurricanes

Rave: Family here from all over the U.S. this weekend for family reunion.

Rant: The weather is not cooperating, it's been raining and cool all week and isn't expected to break before Sat. pm.

Rave: Courageous London folks and their leaders standing up for what's right.

Bless you all and stay safe! **==

AHaugeto Jul 8th, 2005 06:44 AM

Rant: Evil in the form of violent zealotry. Terror.

Rave: That particularly British resolve. There's a reason most bulldogs get named "Winston."

Rave: Thomas Friedman's excellent, excellent op-ed in today's NY Times re: the Muslim world (registration is free). Time for Muslims to step up, shame, and marginalize those who would hijack their religion.

Rant: "Morning" sickness. Total misnomer.

Have a safe weekend, all, and Godspeed to the victims and their families.

dcespedes Jul 8th, 2005 06:48 AM

Rant: Bombings in London, violence, terrorism.

Rave: Bonniebroad is back--hope you enjoyed a great vacation! :-)

Rant: We are in desperate need of rain! LoriNY, sam--send some our way, please!!

Rave: Monster in Law ((~)) Way better than I thought it was going to be!

Rant: Ridig, unstable family members who can't think outside their box.

Rave: Four weeks and counting until skate camp...please let it be cool in Colorado!

I would just like to add to my post earlier this morning by saying that we are thinking of all of you that may be in the hurricane's path.

My husband and I have been following the weather and we wish you and your families safety.

Very sorry, I can't imagine how scary.

Best thoughts for all of you, Tiff & DH

Rave: Londoners

Rant: Terrorists

Rave: Camping this weekend and the weather is supposed to be wonderful.

Rant: Camping with daughter that is teething. Ugh . . . I can't wait until she has all of her teeth and we don't have to go through this anymore!

Have a safe and happy weekend!

mikemo Jul 8th, 2005 07:10 AM

Rave: British resolve. Certainly a wonderful exception to the "Europe - Thy Name is Cowardice" approach to Islamic fanatics murderers recently described in a die Welt article.

Rave: Younger son is leaving for London tonight. He and DIL are celebrating their first wedding anniversary @ Hambleton Hall where they were wed last July.

Rave: Big time rains this last week in SMdA. Guadalajara had the driest June in 50 years.

Wishing speedy and complete recoveries to those injured and condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those so brutally murdered.

Rant: Those hell-bent on disrupting/destroying lives and inner security, holding up religion as an excuse for their violent acts against innocent victims. There isn't a word I could use to describe them that would get past the censors.

Rave: London's spunk and spirit as the workaday world went on almost normally this morning.

Rave: Fabulous week sailing last week off St. Pete, with little effect from red tide, luckily.

Rave: That beautiful beautiful bay area.

Rave: We decided we can't sell the boat.

Rant: An accident at the dock our last day, minutes before we were to start hurricane proofing the boat left DH to do it all by himself and me nursing a sprained ankle and partially dislocated shoulder. :( Shoulders take forever to heal...this one was finally getting better after an accident 8 (!) years ago. :(

Rave: In the course of the accident I managed to take a pleasant little swim off the dock in lovely warm water and neither spilled a bit from the two bags of garbage I was carrying, nor did I drop my car keys, also tightly clutched in my hands. :)

Rants: Terrorists and Hurricanes!!

Rave: With all the bad press to credit card companies, I had a good thing happen. Recently I've begun paying my partners bills as well as my own (early Alzheimer's being the reason). We each got our Citibank Visa/MC statements and I wrote out both checks in full as always. Last month both our charges were a couple thousand dollars, thanks to our New York trip, our upcoming Pacific NW trip, and some major expenses as well. I put each in an envelope and used our address stamps on the return. I then mailed mine which was due fairly soon, but held his on my desk for a couple of weeks since it wasn't due for several weeks. What a surprise when I got my new statement with over $100 in finance charges plus a fine for being late. A rather involved phone call finally made me figure out what I did. I had stamped the wrong envelopes and held MY check missing my date, but had mailed HIS check right away. When I mentioned this to the person on the phone, she took one look at my account, saw I was a good customer, and immediately credited all charges, even though it was totally MY mistake. Meanwhile maybe I should start taking his medication!!

mikemo Jul 8th, 2005 07:31 AM

P,
I had a similar experience with AA Citi MC: The first time I used the direct bank draft transfer to pay my CC bill I was limited to $1000. I was in MX at the time and could not send a check for the remainder.
Once the next month's statement closed I immediately paid the remainder via bank draft and Citibank waived the finance charges.
I still don't use it overseas as I refuse to pay the 3% currency exchange fees.

Tiff Jul 8th, 2005 07:37 AM

Hi Patrick, Happy to know that when you telephoned them they saw your history and reversed the late charges, etc.

I was thinking of you and others in Florida, wishing you safety. Will you have to evacuate?

Best wishes, Tiff

Rant:the state of the world.
I do think terrorism is just going to continue to happen and on a "grander" scale.

Rave: our neighbor's children who are fresh faced and vital. Their very selves are such a wonderful antidote to the state of the world.

Rant: packing up 11 years worth of stuff to move to new office next weekend. I am looking forward to the new venue. There's nothing like a move to purge useless piles of paper!

Rave: new therapy office

Have a good weekend everyone. May goodness, kindness and compassion prevail!

Poohgirl Jul 8th, 2005 08:22 AM

Rant: The bombings in the beautiful city of London.
Rave: The knowledge that the people of the UK are among the toughest there are and it will take a lot more than the cowards responsible for the bombings to bring them down.

Rant: Hurricane Dennis.
Rave: I get to go to my favorite diner for breakfast with my best friend tomorrow. Hey, it took me two months to talk him into this, since he doesn't like the place.

jersey Jul 8th, 2005 08:43 AM

Crappy, pouring day here in Central New Jersey. A good day for a movie and the weekend should prove to be better, weatherwise.

I second Tiff's words. One almost becomes speechless at the horror we are willing do to each other. God help us all.

Rave - I just booked a two week trip to Ireland for my DH and myself to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in September.

My prayers for all who were harmed yesterday in London. We must maintain our hope and dignity. Ghandi said it best...

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always.

LoveItaly Jul 8th, 2005 09:50 AM

Rant: Obviously the bombings in London yesterday by the evil cowards.

Rave: The beautiful and strong people of London.

Rave: All the compasionate and loving people here on Fodors.

Rant: Hurricane warnings for the Gulf of Mexico. Prayers to all of you.

Rave: There are so many more good people in the world then evil people.

Prayer: That everyone who is hurting, stressed or worried be given peace and love.

cd Jul 8th, 2005 11:11 AM

OO
Sorry about your accident! But glad you had a great "sail" week. May you heal quickly.

travelinwifey Jul 8th, 2005 11:17 AM

Rant: I am soo tired of the same few posters that continually try to dictate what others should write on this forum. These people are obsessed.

Rant: That those people don't realize how much what they do is like terrorism. Trying to push their ideology on someone else. And they are so mean too.

Rant: Yesterday's terror attack. Wish I could be more positive Jor.

Rant: That I'm sure a few nasties will be after me now for writing this, I should just let it go.

Rave: Nice people:) Just had a 20 minute conversation with a man from England, a total stranger about all the recent world events.

Rave: Dinner with family and celebrating my niece's 9th birthday((^))

Rave: The Brits ((l))

bonniebroad Jul 8th, 2005 11:27 AM

Thank you very much, dcespedes! I had a great vacation but it is nice to be back in my own bed again!

OO, so sorry about your little unplanned swim! =-O The older I get, the longer it takes anything to feel better ... right now, I think I've injured my neck/jaw adding a little too much weight to the overhead press! :-( But it's getting better .... as I'm sure your bod will, before you know it! :-) Hope everything feels back to normal very soon! ((f))

Meetshare, enjoy your dream home! I'm so pleased for you!

Marilyn Jul 8th, 2005 12:20 PM

Rant: Fanaticism and hatred in all its forms.

Rave: Our family and friends in London have now all reported in and are safe.

Rant: Those who did not receive such good news.

Rave: Congrats to Meesthare! Let's hope Scarlett is as lucky in Portland.

Rave: We passed our county septic system inspection this morning -- the first real step in getting permits for our remodel. The architect is coming over this afternoon to finalize plans.

FainaAgain Jul 8th, 2005 12:31 PM

Usually this thread is full of personal things, this time everything put off till quieter times, London is on everybody's mind, have you noticed this?

Something really out of an ordinary happened to me. A co-worker was talking about her upcoming trip to Portugal, this is where she's from. I told her, another lady (from another firm, we share the same floor)is going there too, go and talk to her, she's from Portugal too.

It turned out, their ancestors came even from the same small island, in 1894 and 1906. They thanked me for bringing them together!

How weird is that, like a movie or a tv story.
