Potatoes are pickier than most other vegetables about how they are stored. If you're not careful, they can sprout, sweeten or shrivel.

Steps:
Avoid rinsing potatoes before storing.

Place potatoes in a brown paper, burlap or plastic bag with holes in it.

Store in a cool, dark, dry place. A root cellar, if you have one, is the best storage option.

Make sure the temperature in the area is about 45 to 50 degrees F. Don't store potatoes in the refrigerator, or they will become too sweet.

Avoid storing potatoes with onions because, when close together, they produce gases that spoil both.

Store potatoes no longer than two months if mature. If they are new, store no longer than one week.

Check on them occasionally and remove those that have become soft or shriveled, as well as those that have sprouted.

Tips:
Potatoes sprout as a result of exposure to light or warm temperatures.

Avoid freezing uncooked potatoes.

Sweet potatoes, although they appear similar to other potatoes, are actually much more delicate. Store sweet potatoes for a maximum of one week.

Rant: My leg is still in a cast.

Rave: Dr. says it might come off on December 5th (assuming x-rays look good)!!!! That's a week earlier than anticipated. Keeping fingers crossed.

Rant: Freezing today.

Rave: It's gonna warm up for the weekend!

Rant: I simply have no vacation plans whatsoever to look forward to. I'm hoping for at least a weekend in Toronto but, damn, it's cold there too!

Rave: My sneaky little mind will come up with an idea and a few $$$ somehow to plan some type of getaway in the spring. I just know it.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

cigalechanta, I tried an experiment yesterday of freezing one of them and then thawing it. It leaked out a brown liquid all over the counter top. I don't think I am going to try to cook it and eat it and will throw it away to the cridders if they want it...far enough away so my dog won't drag it back to the front door for me.

I am not a regular on FFR and R, though I usually lurk here. Just needed to tell John, your message touched my heart. I know exactly what you mean. Tiff, you and your friend and all you love are in my prayers.

Best wishes for the holiday season. May you spend it happily.

Rave: My mother's 'gentleman friend,' a dear dear man, is finally recovering from a week of being comatose after lung cancer surgery. Next week is the 6th anniversary of my father's death and we're so happy to have some good news at what usually is a sad time for our family. Bring on the turkey and the relatives!

Rave: Am having lunch with three wonderful friends in a few minutes to celebrate Friday (maybe we'll indulge in a little libation just because :-)

No rants--am feeling very grateful right now.

jorr, I live in Raleigh, NC (you know, Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area ... For sure, it's God's country 'cause the sky is Tar Heel Blue!!! ;;) )

The closest I've ever been to Minnesota is watching "Fargo" every winter (the first snow/ice/freezing weather that comes to Raleigh, we pull out that movie ... it's become a winter ritual!) I always say to my DH, WHEN are we going to visit that part of the country???" I love cold weather so would probably love living there but my hot-weather loving husband would not!!! Sounds like a great place for the Christmas holidays ....

Tiff, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. We had a similar situation a few years ago, the nicest guy in the world. I still can't believe he's gone.

RAVE: Exciting new enterprises, both fun and challenging! I haven't been this jazzed in ages.

RANT: I bet you are all psychic enough to know without my writing it down.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

bennnie Nov 18th, 2005 10:47 AM

Late breaking news - I just got promoted!!!!!

johnthedorf Nov 18th, 2005 11:01 AM

Michael C. on the Food Channel says if you put an Apple with the potatoes they won't sprout. Never tried it.

ethel Nov 18th, 2005 11:26 AM

Congrats Bennnie, that's awesome!!!

Tiff Nov 18th, 2005 11:30 AM

Add another one to the banned list: yawn_boring. many may have disagreed with YB but it's another step forward to making this just another boring site that fewer and fewer people will come to.

Rant : I could be the first case of the flu (if the season is Nov to April how can I already have it?) Got it Tuesday and am still trying to recover. Ugh!

Rave: Visited my sis who recently moved to The TO (haha). It was an amazingly beautiful weekend in southern CA and the drive to Malibu was really pretty. Lots of hiking trails near her house. Seemed rural and not at all waht you'd expect from southern CA. Also the drive on I 5 was not so bad.

jorr Nov 18th, 2005 11:45 AM

bonniebroad, I have been there several years ago and it is beautiful.

"Fargo" is one of the strangest films I have seen and I watch it every time it is on TV. I once talked to a person majoring in Film at USC who told me that Fargo is one of the films which they study. There are lots of geographic mistakes in the film but I love it. The Accent is typical of lots of people here but is rare in younger people. My grandparents sounded just like Marge Helganberger the police chief. Lots of people still sound like the car dealership owner (William Massey). My cousin has the same accent and I can't figure out why that is.

That scene where snow is blowing across the road with near white-out is very typical of what I drove through a few days ago. The lake cabin where the kidnappers hung out near Brainerd was for sale on Ebay a few years ago.

dmkujat Nov 18th, 2005 11:53 AM

Rant: the lake effect snow we are being dumped with right now...sigh...guess after a beautiful fall, it had to happen sooner or later.

Rave: Getting my snow tires put on today!

Rave: Both of my kids will be home for Thanksgiving! WOO HOO!

Rant: Neither of my kids will be home for Christmas! BOO HOO!

kopp Nov 18th, 2005 11:54 AM

Tiff, I am so sorry to hear about your friend's cancer. I can't imagine how difficult it is to deal with at any age, yet alone so very young. Prayers to all involved, including you.
