Fort Lauderdale area

Would someone please recommend a nice place to stay in the area that would have at least 2 bedrooms and 2 baths? The only thing I can find is a highrise in Pompano Beach and I think we'd have to drive to everything but the beach. Please help with any suggestions.

I've been there once and will never go back. Gulf coast beaches are much nicer than the Atlantic side. Plus, Pompano Beach seemed a little seedy to me. I got the feeling I was in a high crime area. I could be wrong about that, but I didn't like it.

There are 2 types of people in the world: East Coasters & West Coasters!
I will state right off that I fall into the former category! We have been going to Florida
for about 25 years (East coast & Gulf).
I prefer East in contrast to the above poster. I like the dark, hard-packed
sand on the beaches around Ft. Lauderdale, Miami & to the North on Delray. I also like the 'saltiness' of the ocean & the crashing waves on the East coast. Having grown up on an East coast I am accustomed to the sun rising over the water. Therefore, I am disoriented on the West coast when the sun sets over the water!
The other thing to contend w/ on the Gulf side is red tide. So, all in all, I wld. recommend East Coast. There are many fine places to stay in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Tell me more about your
likes/dislikes, 'must haves', budget & I will try to help. In the meantime, I suspect that you will hear from a few
West Coast people & in the end you will know if you are an East Coaster or
a West Coaster!!

Pompano Beach has more mom & pop hotels than other places, but the crime rate is no different.

Lago Mar in Ft. Lauderdale. This is a very nice hotel right on the beach. Haven't stayed there in a few years, but the food was something you could skip.

Pompano Beach sucks, try the Marriot Vacation Club right on the strip in Ft Lauderdale

Pompano Beach, if it wasn't for the strip clubs and prostitutes that place would be pretty boring with all those senior citizens living there.

Sam, I'll take you up on that offer (I'm a fellow East Coast fan).

We're planning on a weekend at Lauderdale in July after a 3 night stay in South Beach.

We like to be very central as we like to leave the car parked when bar/restaurant hopping. Since we'll be coming from South Beach, a more laid-back area is Ok, but we'll still want places to go out to. We prefer mid-sized hotels with balconies (high rises make for a crowded beach). A row back is OK if it's a good property with a good price.

Not stuck on Ft. Lauderdale proper, but figured it would have the most concentrated area.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Try the New River Hotel on the very beautiful Las Olas Blvd...The place has a French Quarter feel to it...walk to restaurants and a great Jazz pub, Oharas is on the same block...there's also a nice nightlife district less than a mile down the road, don't know what they're calling it these days, maybe Las Olas Riverfront? One of the best beaches in South Florida is a nice bike ride down the road at Las Olas and the ocean, across from the famous Elbo Room bar...Most of the young ladies at this beach are doing the "Thong Song," if you're with your wife, make sure you have good wrap-around sunglasses so she can't see your eyes. Overall though, much more laid back and less attitude than South Beach.

I think the New River Hotel Jason is referring to is actually called The Riverside Hotel (unless they've recently changed names). I've stayed there many times and it is a nice hotel in a perfect location so long as you're not set on being on or near the beach. The number in my roladex is 1-800-325-3280.

Thank you for all the recommendations but we need at least 2 bedrooms and baths so the hotel advice doesn't help.
We're in the area for a wedding and have decided to to stay for a week since we've never been to this part of Florida. Being from New England, hard sand and big waves are no problem. The onlt Marriott location I can find that are condos is the Beach Place at $350 a night which is a lttle high when staying for 7 days. PLEASE , any recommendations? What do you think of Lauderdale by the Sea ? There are low rise condos there right on the beach. ( we want to be ON the beach) Advice please! Thanks!

Fort Lauderdale and Pompano are both clean and safe places for tourists. The Fort Lauderdale beach is extremely safe as the city is taking no chances of having tourists messed with. It is also quite inexpensive. Being a major metropolitan area there is a full range of activities whereas on the west-gulf coast you are quite limited in activities. The Schubert Motel in Victoria Park may have 2 bedroom units for rent. - 954-763-7434. PS: The weather here is absolutely perfect. See you soon!
