Not all the Pacific Northwest has the rain you all moan about. I live in beautiful Eastern washington. We have hot summers, snow and skiing right out our back door in the winter and Seattle only 2 1/2 hours away when we want a big city. I grew up in Cowlitz County and the rain never bothered me, but I sure do love the weather of eastern Washington. Not only do we have the winter sports, we have the rivers for the summer sports, we also have the cheapest power rates in the United States. But as much as I love it here there is nothing like Seattle on a sunny day, with a Dicks hamburger and a spot to sit at Gasworks park!

Must be an inside joke, Gardyloo.

Fodorite018 Feb 28th, 2006 03:33 PM

Beachbum--Not really, but a bit off the typical tourist path. There is a troll under that bridge. It is actually a pretty cool thing to see.

I spent many a year in Seattle - have webbed feet to prove it.

Lived there when the only sensible shoes to wear were Waffle Stompers. Anyone remember those?

Eastern Washington is totally different - lots of sunshine. Eastern Washington even has a desert - fergadsakes!

The first nine months there, I hardly saw the sun - dizzle, gray skies, drizzle, gray skies - luckily I was too busy studying, but I sure missed California - where I now live and hope to stay for a very, very long time! :)
(Not all Californians want to move to the PNW).

That Troll is hiding from the rain under that bridge too! LOL Gardyloo~

This girl came to Portland from Florida. Let me tell you, it was like arriving in Paradise :D
When it rains, I know I will go to a movie or Powells or shop or hang out at home.
When the sun shines, I know I will be out all day and walk til I drop..or the Pup drops.
It is never too hot and never too cold.
We have not had to shovel one drop of snow .. We do not miss hurricanes , we have no mosquitos.
Without sugar coating it, here in my little aerie in Portland, I cannot think of anywhere I would rather live..and best of all, I can drive to Seattle anytime I wish...

Gardyloo, you got me thinking about local references - who here remembers the Bubbleator, or Wunda-Wunda?

enzian Feb 28th, 2006 03:52 PM

Bubbleator--yes!

Not Wunda-Wunda, though.

P.S. The sun is shining. . but it still probably counts as a cloudy day.

suze Feb 28th, 2006 03:57 PM

Wunda Wunda yes
Bubbleator no

Who else cried when the Dog House closed?

The sun is shining right now downtown Seattle 4:55pm.

Orcas Feb 28th, 2006 03:58 PM

I have to admit, I have been free with my words on So. CA. and I thought I'd get blow torched out of the water. You'll have to excuse me, but I'm still recovering from my recent trip down there. I appreciate the indulgence of the S. Californians. (Or they haven't noticed my comments, as they are hidden in a thread on the weatehr in Seattle....)

This red_dog has started a couple of threads that are more fun thread than the usual, we have to admit.

Gardyloo Feb 28th, 2006 04:01 PM

Bubblator was in the paper recently - remains of the the days.

Wunda, sure. Brakeman Bill? How about Lloyd Cooney? Man, how I loved to hate that guy.

dsquared Feb 28th, 2006 04:03 PM

Wunda-Wunda: I met her at the World's Fair; I was thrilled (I was four!) Not as well known as JP, but I adored her.

http://www.donmccunelibrary.com/~don...0/05exnw17.htm

The Bubbleator, according to the Seattle Center website: "One of the major attractions in the Pavilion during the Fair was the 150-person “Bubbleator,” a glass-enclosed elevator – shaped like a giant bubble – which carried passengers up a story to the “World of Tomorrow” exhibit. After the Fair, the building was remodeled as a sports arena and re-opened in 1964 as the Seattle Center Coliseum. The Bubbleator was installed in Center House for years."

And suze, yes, the late, lamented Dog House.....

dsquared Feb 28th, 2006 04:04 PM

Yikes! Lloyd Cooney - I'd managed to forget him. You still have Jim "disaster is my middle name" Forman don't you?

hester Feb 28th, 2006 05:17 PM

Wunda, Wunda, Oh boy, I haven't thought of her for awhile. But I can still sing her song. Wunda, Wunda is my name, boys and girls I'm glad you came. We'll have fun as I explain, How we play our Wunda games.

vinceneil Feb 28th, 2006 05:55 PM

Wunda song eh?..sounds like something ripped off from the files of Dr. Seuss

hester Feb 28th, 2006 06:58 PM

Dr. Seuss? Nope just Wunda, Wunda, Seattle cira 1952-1972. Vinceneil isn't ripped off from Motley Crew?

vinceneil Feb 28th, 2006 07:01 PM

No, but it is ripped off from Motley Crue :)

artlover Feb 28th, 2006 07:06 PM

I don't have to convince myself that the weather here in Seattle is "good"--I grew up in Ohio and compared to that, it's "fabulous"--it's all relative, right?

However, I agree with Suze--really, everyone who doesn't already live here--you really don't want to move here! Really!

seattlescuba Feb 28th, 2006 07:12 PM

like artlover says, if you do enjoy washington state, try spokane or wallawalla instead. it much cheaper and a lot less crowded

enzian Feb 28th, 2006 07:48 PM

Suze---pretty funny---our posts probably hit one second apart. The sun coming out was beautiful--my office window looks north, and takes in the Cascades, across Lake Union, the Space Needle, and west over Elliot Bay and Shilshole to Bainbridge Island, and beyond to the Olympics. When the sun comes out it is incredible. But we won't talk about how often that happpens. . . .

My stepdad definitely mourned the loss of the Dog House. He and my mom lived up in Port Townsend and hit the Dog every time they came to Seattle. Thanks for the memory.

So how could you know Wunda Wunda and not the Bubbleator?
