Hello, some things which you might want to see
in Nova Scotia are the Nova Scotia International
Tattoo (held end of June beg. of July). Peggy;'s
Cove Lighthouse is world famous as well as Lunenburg which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Lots to
see in Halifax including the International Buskers
Festival the largest of it kind in Eastern North America. You may also want to visit the beautiful
island of Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail. For
more info call Checkin Nova Scotia at 1-800-565-0000

Cheers - Jimmy

My husband and I have made two trips to Nova Scotia and this summer we will be departing from Nova Scotia to take the ferry to Newfoundland! If I only had one day to spend in Nova Scotia it would be to spend it on Cape Breton Island! Beautiful scenery, frequest sightings of whales off-shore and bald eagles on the wing. There are several places from which you can take whale-watching boat trips (Cheticamp on the western shore is one such town). Drive the Cabot Trail around the entire island. Make your first stop at the southern part of the island near Bras' Dor Lake at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum - what a facinating man he was! In Halifax there is a museum near the waterfront that has a lot of information about an explosion in the early 1900's that nearly devastated the city! Also take in the fortress on the hill overlooking the bay. By all means take in Peggy's Cove, etc. Hopefully you'll have at least a week, but even then you'll not have more than a day or two in each "good" spot. Enjoy your trip!!

My husband and I are interested in a vacation that starts in Maine (Bangor and Bar Harbor) and ends in Nova Scotia. Any recommendations of "off the beaten path" places to see and stay? We have about a week.

You should read the fiction novel with Halifax as the historical setting called Barometer Rising by Hugh MacLennan. Halifax takes on so much more meaning if you read that first and then visit the citadel. It brings the city to life in a new way. Be sure to visit the marine/maritime? museum while you are there.

I am from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. It is so rich with friendly people and proud heritage. I grew up in Glace Bay but have travelled all around the Island. In fact, my husband and I honeymooned in Sydney Mines and Sydney(Rocking Horse Inn) last summer. There are many festiavals and things to do there and always a helpful person around to show you the way. You may e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

I do not recommend the restaurant next to the Lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, lobster salad and cole slaw made with Miracle Whip, fried foods very greasy, limited menu and not worth it.
Also stayed at Holiday Inn in Halifax, located quite a walk from downtown, noisy singles dances on weekends and rooms not soundproofed. You can do better right downtown, Sheraton. but get a room away from the casino.

We're visiting Nova Scotia on Nov. 21-26. We'll be flying from Tennessee to Bangor, Maine, and renting a car there. Would you have accommodations for three women (me, my mother and sister) on Nov. 21? We could share a room or suite if it has sleeping space for three plus a bathroom. Please send info on availability and prices. Also would appreciate any recommendations as to type of clothing to pack for this season in Nova Scotia. Will there be fall colors at this time? How long should we allow for touring Prince Edward Island, given our schedule for all of Nova Scotia. What would be your recommendations for an itinerary? Would appreciate any suggestions you might offer.

Thanks,

Luci

I know the PERFECT place to stay in Halifax! A friend and I stayed at a wonderful place in August 1997 which I would highly recommend. It is called Halifax's Waverley Inn (check out the website at www.waverleyinn.com). It is a gorgeous old place and the rooms are decorated in lovely old antiques. It is in a great location, a 5-minute walk to the waterfront. The best part is the price -- I think our double was only about $75 per night, including breakfast and free snacks (cookies, etc. at bedtime) in a hospitality room on the main floor. They also had free parking. We thought this place was a great value. There is an excellent old stone pub right next door if I remember correctly. We stayed 2 nights and wish we'd had longer. It was recommended in Frommers -- here is what they had to say about it:
A rambling old Victorian inn on three floors, the
Waverley offers only 32 rooms, but what rooms!
They are classically nineteenth century, a great many
having high four-poster beds requiring steps to mount,
and they have served the likes of Oscar Wilde and
George Vanderbilt since the founding of the hotel in
1876. Today, each room has modern facilities as well:
private bath (several have large jetted tubs), phones,
color television and air conditioning; and breakfast
and snacks are served downstairs from 6:30 A.M.
until midnight in a cheerful, self-service, "Friendship
Room." Location of the hotel: in the downtown area,
about a 15-minute walk from the historic properties.

Also, don't miss the gorgeous public gardens in Halifax! The city has some excellent restaurants too. The best meal we had in the 10 days we spent exploring Maine, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick was in Halifax at a restaurant on the water that I think was called Salty's. Have a wonderful time.
