Fall trip

I'm in need of some fall vacation ideas. SIL and I went to Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI last October. Thought we would do another fall trip. Just not sure where to. We've never been to NYC and thought it would be good for a few days of shopping and shows. After staying in NYC a few days, where to? Anything in Connecticut? Other thought is Hilton Head, Charleston, Savannah. We just want to GO! Thanks everyone for all of their input on this forum. It contains some very interesint reading.

Hi sjrellis, I have no idea how Charleston is in fall (although I would think it is a good time to visit without really knowing) but others here can answer that question. I can tell you that I was in Charleston this last April and Charleston is a very beautiful city and such a pleasure to visit. And oh my, the food is terrific also. BTW, if you go to Charleston see if you can get the book "Charleston" by John Jakes from your library and read it before your trip. It will really add to the enjoyment of your trip. ISBN 0-451-20733-5. Whatever you two decide enjoy every moment!

Hey~we're heading to NYC-6 days in the Fall as well, followed by 3 days in the Hudson Valley and 3 more in Lenox,MA for peak foliage.(This is October 4-18). We are planning of visiting the various estates, gardens, antique shops galore and some of the haunts of folks like Edith Wharton.(Mass) Eleanor Roosevelt's "home away from home"-Valkiln is a great place to visit.(hudson river valley).I'm fond of Connecticut and particularly the Litchfield area. You might look at Copper Beech Inn in Ivoryton.

I'm from California so am always taken back by how very close together places are in the East. None of our travels are more than 2 hours and most are much less from the previous destination.

Charleston and Savannah could be great, but in October you still run the risk of hurricane weather.

I live in Charleston and think the Fall is one of the best times here. I would not let the possiblity of hurricanes sway you in the least bit about coming here. Heck, if possible threat of natural disaster stopped me from traveling, I wouldn't have seen most of the places in the world I've been fortunate enough to visit. I recently posted a trip report on Charleston after playing tour guide to friends visiting the city if you're interested in some of the things the Holy City has to offer. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Happy travels!
