For NW Montana, Flathead Lake is a beautiful area and is close to Glacier National Park--an area with some of the most spectacular scenery in the U.S.

If you aren't looking for something as "civilized" as Flathead Lake (which is beautiful with lots of rental properties), you could check out the Seeley Lake area (many smaller, more primitive lakes with, I assume, smaller, more primitive cabins). Or how about renting a Forest Service cabin or a "retired" lookout tower? Check out http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/reservations/ for a listing of these.
I don't think most are available for more than a few nights, but it should say on the website.
Back to the more conventional rentals, in addition to the links others have listed, I'd do a search for realtors in Missoula, Polson, Bigfork, Kalispell, and Whitefish as I think they handle some of the recreational rentals. Also, if you go to www.mymontana.com you'll see a listing for on-line newspapers (click the link for "More Montana Paper") which have classified ads for real estate. Good luck, and post what you find if you want more comments!
