Whar are conditions like to drive from Orlando International Airport to Davenport? I am from Europe so not used to driving on the right-hand side and am a bit nervous about traffic/ intersections/ signposting etc in US. Will be taking a hire car from the airport and driving alone. Any hints/dire warnings?!

Are you talking about Davenport, Iowa?

If so, you landed at the wrong airport. Orlando, Florida to Davenport, Iowa is about 1250 miles or about 20 hours of driving.

Driving on the the "right" side is not that difficult. In fact most of your driving will be on interstate hwys with 2 lanes going in each direction, no lights, no turnarounds, etc. Just plan your route accordingly and you will be fine, but that's a hell of a drive. You sure you don't want to fly from Orlando to someplace closer?

Thanks AA. No, its not Davenport Iowa, its a small town in Florida, - about 70 miles from the airport I think. I have a good map of the area and directions for getting there, - its just the actual driving that I'm anxious about.

Never knew there was a Davenport, FL and I live in Florida.

Anyway, don't worry too much about driving. It's really not any different. After few minutes you will get the swing of it.

The first time EVER that I drove on the "wrong" side was in Jamaica with very narrow roads, no signs, and occasionally little "buzzed" (I know, it was wrong, but I was young and stupid), but after about 10 km out of the airport it became very natural.

Best advice I can offer is to follow the traffic -

Why are you going to Davenport? family, friends? that has to be it, otherwise keep on going west on I-4 to the beautiful beaches of the west coast of Florida....

Have a wonderful trip!

BTW, plan your drive using www.mapquest.com. It will give you detailed instructions on how to get from MCO to Davenport, Florida.

If it is where I am thinking you will be traveling west on I-4 and there is alot of road construction on that stretch, and the roads will cut back and forth alot. Just be aware and go with the flow..it should be mostly a straight shot on the highway, welcome !

I had never heard of Davenport, either. I googled it and it looks to be closer than you think, about 30 minutes by car.

When you get on the interstate (route 4) just stay in the middle or right lane except to pass. And keep up with the highway speeds, go with the flow as Wednesday says. You will get at least a half mile warning sign before each exit, so as long as you know your directions you will be fine.

Have a great visit!

Thanks everyone. Going to Davenport cos it has a hang-gliding centre (Wallaby Ranch.) Ironic - going hangliding but afraid of the traffic!
Thanks for all the hints and help.
