Driving from New Orleans to Chicago
Hi Everyone,
So the bf and I are from Chicago but we are going to New Orleans for New Years week. We decided to take the Amtrak down to New Orleans since it is much cheaper than a flight, even though it is a day long trip. But we haven't decided what to take back home. Flights to go back home is still expensive. I'm not sure if I want to take the Amtrak back because I might get sick of staying inside for a long period of time. We were thinking about renting a car and driving back home. The drive is distance is a much shorter time than the Amtrak. But my only fear is that it is the winter time. Has anyone driven from New Orleans to Chicago during the winter? How was it??

I would be equally concerned about one-way rental fees which are usually pretty high.
Weather is so hit and miss that time of year - you could hit an ice storm that forces everything to a halt for several days. If you are flexible about the return date, just watch the weather and play it by ear.

Coach or Roomette? Make sure to join Amtrak Guest Rewards to get the points for a free trip someday.
You could take the CONO back to Memphis (arriving about 11PM) and check into a hotel. Spend 24 hours in Memphis (maybe Graceland?) and then catch the next CONO with a Roomette back to Chicago.
Hertz has good deals in Memphis (downtown) if you decided to drive from there back to Chicago.
