Distance from Mesa Verde to Grand Canyon
Can anyone tell me the approximate time it will take to drive from Mesa Verde to the Grand Canyon (south rim), during the summer months?
Also, can anyone tell me the approximate time it takes from Mesa Verde to Canyon de Chelly, and then from Canyon de Chelly to the Grand Canyon?
Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Sara. I have done the drive you describe. We left Cortez (motel), after Mesa Verde, and drove to Aztec where we toured the Aztec National Monument, which by the way has nothing to do with Aztec culture; it was mistakenly named years ago.
From Aztec we continued on to Chinle for our visit to Canyon de Chelly. We arrived about in Chinle about 4 PM and had ample time to drive around the roads near the canyon rim. From Aztec to Chinle is about 165 miles. We did not push it. The road is fine. It is two lane of couse for most of the way, but mostly flat.
The next day we continued on by driving south to route 264 and then turned west to Moemkopi, Cameron, and the south rim.
From Chinle using that route is about 240 miles to the Bright Angel Lodge.
The road is a little twisting, but there it was just another drive through the desert. We stopped a few times to see what the Navajo and Hopi attractions were, and we of course stopped at view points for the canyon. So we needed about 7 hours to make the trip.
I really don't know what you are worried about road wise. I would be more concerned that my car was in tip top condition.

Mesa Verde to De Chelly - about 150 miles
De Chelly to South Rim - about 240 miles
Roads are wide two lane and not heavily traveled. Shoud average between 50 and 55 mph. Consider visiting Monument Valley after de Chelly and before heading to Gr. CAnyon. Adds less than 50 miles to the trip Chinle to east entrance, Gr. Canyon.
