There are some wonderful restaurants in Destin. No matter where you eat you must try the grilled amberjack. My favorite restaurant is The Back Porch. Depending on where you are staying you can walk to the Back Porch during the day in your swimsuit and have a drink or lite lunch. I also like Pompano Joes (the hot tuna dip appetizer is wonderful).
Stay away from A.J.s. The tuna dip appetizer there tasted like the tuna salad I make at home out of a can and the vegatables were frozen and tasteless.
Be prepared for a wait on a table anywhere you go.
A great day trip is to drive east to Seaside (www.seasidefl.com). Along the way is Grayton Beach where a friend of mine recommends the Red Bar restaurant.
Of course the best part of Destin is the beautiful white beaches and emerald waters.
Have fun on your trip!

Tara,
Great restaurants are HArry Ts, The Back Porch, The Louisiana Lagniappe all in Destin. Out on Hwy 98 out of Destin towards Blue Mountain,Seagrove,Grayton Beach is Bayou Bills, great place and on the bay in Niceville is an absolutely fantastic place to eat called Guiseppis(forgive the spelling) that has indoor dining, outdoor uncovered dining or outdoor covered dining. Hope this helps. All the above mentioned are waterfront except Bayou Bills, the servings are more food than you can imagine to eat at one sitting though.
Hope this helps.

Grilled Amberjack at the Back Porch? Can you be any more redneck? Amberjack is the most disgusting fish you can get your hands on. Wait til they clean one out and watch them empty all the worms out of their gut. The locals call it a trash fish and wouldn't eat one if it was free.
Can't understand why anyone eats at the Back Porch. Up to three hours to pay $20 for fried fish. Eat at places that take reservations: Soleil & Luna, Vintij, Chops, Flamingo Cafe, Marina Cafe, Ocean Club, Criollas, Bud & Alleys, & Cafe Thirty-A. (Chops, Flamingo Cafe and Marina Cafe have early bird specials.) They're all considered moderate to upper-priced, but what's your time worth to you on vacation if you have to wait three hours for a table? You can have a guaranteed reservation, no crowds packed in like cattle, a beautifully prepared main course for $18 to $22 with beautiful surroundings and views to match. For dessert, take in one of the local ice cream parlors like Brusters.
And don't forget to stop off at seafood market one afternoon and load up on steamed shrimp. Take the family down to the beach after sunset and have a feast.

The name of the game at restaurants is wait. Fudpuckers has alligator feeding now. Pompano Joes is excellent. Wait is hour. However, do what we did last week. Go straight into the bar, sit on backside if you want to see view. Order Crab Nachos. This is a meal for two and so good.
They have opened a Cracker Barrel for country food lovers.
Stay with our son, but we have stayed at Sea Oats Motel at Crystal Beach and it is tops in my book.
