Day trip to Sanibel
Will be staying on Ft. Myers Beach around Times Square and was thinking about a day trip to Sanibel to do some shopping on Periwinkle Way, maybe do some biking and head to the Lighthouse end of the beach and get lunch and dinner there.
Any things I should definitely see or do for the day? How about restaurants/bars?
Will the trip from Ft. Myers beach Estero Blvd to Periwinkle be super congested or expensive in a cab?
Thanks in advance.

When are you going to be there? Yes traffic can be very heave, any time of the year. Just getting out of Ft Myers Beach is a major undertaking! If I were you, I'd rent a car for the day and not even THINK about a cab!!! The shopping isn't special enough for the trip, but you might enjoy the drive through to the end of Captiva, where it really gets pretty as the road follows the water.

Our favorite meal on Sanibel was Grandma Dot's near the marina. Not a great atmosphere, overlooking yachts in dock, but the food was excellent. Sanibel is definitely worth the day trip, despite the traffic to get out of FM Beach. It's a nice break from the crowds and junk stores. Take a drive or ride through Ding Darling for a back-to-nature break. The birds are awesome.

We jsut came back for a week's holiday in Sanibel last week - had a great time. The wildlife refuge is definitely worth the visit. The lighthouse is not spectacular but the walk on the beach towards it was very nice. On a nice day the sunset is spectacular and we think these restaurants are nice: Hungry Heron on Palm Ridge and the Green Flash on Captiva Island. By the way, even if you don't consider yourself a shelling person - it is hard to resist.
Have a good holiday!

Grandma Dot's is great. After the causeway, turn left on to Periwinkle. It'a about a mile down and then you turn left by the marina. Katie Gardenia's is wonderful; but my favorite is Traders. It's on Periwinkle and easy to find. Enjoy yourself.
