Date of department store sales

Date of department store sales
Hi there. A few friends and I are planning a trip to NY toward the end of May, and are wondering if any of the big department stores have their spring/summer sales around that time. I know that in London, midyear sale-season is at the start of June. I haven't been able to find out this information on any of the store's websites, so if anyone knows, we would appreciate the advice!! Thanks very much, Si

Unlike the UK and many othe European countries, in the Us sales are allowed all year long. Major department stores actually have sales every week at this point, other chains (like The Gap)mark some things down every week to make way for new merchadise.
Memorial day is considered a big holiday and here that does mean sales, but I'm not convinced that it will necessarily be any better than the week before and the week after. It's just the beginning of summer here,and certain categories (like swimsuits) are likely to have their first real markdowns.
The huge, wade- through- the- garbage- to- find-the-good-stuff-really-cheap types of sales are in February (even into March--some store here are clearing out what's left of fall/winter for amazing prices, some have nothing left) and, for true summer stuff, September (Labor day)

Most major department stores announce "special one-day sales" about every other week. They happen so often that it is difficult to figure out what actual original price was. When we have had visitors from London, they always do a lot of shopping here and tell us the availability, variety and price of most clothing items is inexpensive compared to home.

It seems the sales are running all the time these days. It seems Macy's, for example, has a one day sale nearly every week! Memorial Day is 5/26 this year. There will be sales in all the big department stores, probably starting well ahead of the actual holiday.

Most retailers in the US are doing very badly, particularly the department stores as they are heavily dependent on apparel, probably the weakest segment of retail right now. As a result, most are running almost constant promotions each and every week.
At the end of May, you'll definately see sales for the Memorial Day holiday. Many in season items, i.e. summer clothes, will probably run between 10% and 25% off the original price. That may not apply to all items as the summer clothing season will have just begun. However, you may be able to find much better deals on traditional spring items as the stores are trying to "clear" older items.
A few tips, Macy's will sometimes run even better deals on Wednesdays. Any of the local New York Newspapers will probably have some kind of circular in the Sunday edition for several of the larger department stores.
One other suggestion, if you plan on spending a substatial amount, you may want to consider opening one of their store credit cards, if eligible given your citizenship. Stores like Saks and Macy's will usually give you an additional 10% off all items purchased the day the card is issued, which in most cases is within about 20 minutes of applying for the card. When you get the bill, simply pay the entire amount off to avoid a finance charge.
