Cycling in Greenville SC
When most people think of SC they think of Charleston or the beaches. I actually live closer to the mountains. This Easter my husband and I decided to take a quick over night trip to Greenville and act like tourists.
If you have never been to Greenville before, it is worth a visit. The Reedy River cuts directly through the city. It has a magnificent 80 foot waterfall and miles of rapids. Main Street is about 100 yards from the falls and is linked to the water by a pedestrian suspension bridge.
We stayed at the Hampton Inn which is river view. Thank goodness for Hilton Honors. We paid $150 and were upgraded to a riverfront room with a balcony. After walking around downtown (among the boutiques and art galleries) we selected Soby’s for supper. I highly recommend their shrimp and grits.
The next morning we set off on our bikes. Greenville has a 20 mile bike path that closely parallels the river. We took the easy route – two miles downstream. We pedaled through the River Park, through a residential area and on to Cleveland Park. (Of course that meant our return trip was mostly uphill. We made it back to eat at Mellow Mushroom for lunch.
We had a blast. We hope to go back at tackle the upstream portion of the trail later in the summer.

That sounds like a lovely bike path. Thanks for sharing this trip report, as it might get people to think toward this less orthodox destination. A suspension bridge and 80 foot waterfall in mid-South Carolina; I wouldn't have imagined that!

Sounds like fun! We saw a little of the bike path you mention when we were in Greenville the end of January. It looked inviting winding beside the river in the heart of the city. The weather was lousy while we were there but we did see a couple of bikers along it anyway. We had lunch at High Cotton which overlooks part of the riverside path. Good restaurant too.
Did you get a chance to see the Russian Icon collection at the M&G Heritage Green, Bob Jones Univ. Museum downtown? If not, then next time you're there. I highly recommend it if you like that kind of art work. It is a truly fantastic collection.

You know those who are closest don't do what is in their backyard. I live an hour from Greenville and have never seen the Bob Jones Museum and have never peeked at the world's largest collection of Wyeths at at the Greenville Museum of Art.
I guess you always have to save something for later.

If anyone is interested in the Swamp Rabbit trail and doesn't want to transport a bike to Greenville, I just read that the city is expanding its bike share program. Five dollars buys a day's membership which includes one free hour. After that it is $4 per half hour.
Another reason to visit the Greenville area is the BMW plant. There is a neat plant tour and a museum. The museum is free.
