Versailles on S.W. 8th Street in Little Havana. So authentic, it's 90% Miami Cubans there all the time. It's loud, bustling, cheap, and the food is really great. Try the bistec (skinny steak), or the arroz con pollo (chicken and rice).
south west 8th street is also rt 441 (41)it goes right threw coral gables Versailles on S.W. 8th Street in Little Havana. But it becomes on way closer to the city of Miami it is two way by Versailles.
Versailles is east of SW 37th Avenue on 8th Street. Las Americas is on Miami Beach and is alot closer than Versailles. Also try Larios on the beach right on Ocean Drive which is a higher priced version of a great local cuban retaurant in Miami.
FYI, I have now returned from my trip to Miami Beach. Cabs are expensive!! From Surfside (north Miami Beach) to Versailles (Little Havana) it was $45 plus tip each way. Cab to South Beach from there (10-12 mis) was $25+ each way. Yikes.
yep -- add into that the cost of a cab to/from airport and it more than justifies the cost of a rental car...which is usually pretty cheap in Florida
Versailles is a really a nice place to go for authentic Cuban food at absolutely low prices. Try the special of the day. But it is not advisable to go there from the beach unless you drive your own car. And even so, it is a long drive. Forget a taxi to get there not worth it. But of course in South Beach you would pay several times more for a meal than in the real Versailles.
Have to realize that Miami, the bigger Miami is spread out. Good luck.

There is an excellent and authentic Cuban restaurant, with great prices on Collins at approximately 17th Ave. It is on the west side of the street. Sorry the name is not coming to me. We run (not walk) to Cuban restaurants the minute we hit FL as we do not have any where we live. Love Versailles, but this one is right in South Beach if that is where you are staying. We ate there 3 times on our last visit.
The restaurant on Collins near 17th is El Viajante Segundo-- across the street from the Delano. It's been a while since I've eaten there, but last time I did it was quite good.
Puerto Sagua is a favorite, but bear in mind it's a no-atmosphere diner; it definitely helps to speak Spanish (I'm a bilingual gringo-- they love my blue eyes and Puerto Rican accent), but the food itself is wonderful. Good strong Cuban coffee.
Lario's on the Beach is more high-falutin' in its atmosphere, but the food is unreconstituted, un-gussied up Cuban. Some items are better than others (great ropa vieja, tasty fricasé de pollo, but dried-out and hard chicharrones de pollo), but the mojitos are strong and the music loud. Even with the Gloria Estefan connection, it gets more locals than tourists, and Spanish is the lingua franca.
Versailles is THE Cuban place in Miami itself, so if you're in that city (Miami Beach being a different municipality), plan on a trip to Little Havana. !Que aproveches!
