What areas of Chicago should I avoid staying in. Is Arlington Heights, Oakbrook, and O Hare area OK?

Where do you need to be? That's a broad area.
Those areas all have options which are fine, if you're looking for hotels.

Those are all safe areas; O'Hare is the closest in, with the best, and cheapest, public transportation.

All are safe, Arlington Heights is way out if you are travelling into the city. O'Hare is the closest, Oakbrook is in the middle (about 30 mins in no traffic) but the nicest of the 3.

You can get a good deal on Priceline for a hotel on North Michigan Avenue which is very safe.

Is there a reason you are asking about different suburbs? What are you planning to do? There are plenty of safe areas in the city and many other suburbs.
