Boston/Cape Cod
We will be spending 3 nights in Cape Cod (mon-Thurs) followed by 3 nights in Boston in July. We are staying in Wellfleet, on the cape, and the Newbury St. Guest House in Boston. We would like any recommendations on places to eat, and beaches or other activities we shouldn't miss in either area.

hi sara, I live on the cape so I know it really well..
from your messge it looks like you are coming next week?... that is nice time of year for boston, but can still be quite chilly on the cape (ocean is still very cold so if wind blows off it, it will be nippy)... wellfleet is outer cape which is more desolate and naturally beautiful (dunes, cliffs, beaches etc) its pretty awesome out there... you will not be able to swim because wate ris still only about 50 degrees, so if you went in you would die of hypothermia...
good news is you are within 15mins of some nice areas...
cahoon hollow beach/park is nice place to spend a sunny day... so is nauset beach national park, and cape cod lighhouse in eastham...
best fried clams and great seafood (not fnacy but nice and tummy) is cookes in orleans... a nice sit down dinner is chatham squire or christians in chatham on main st.. I highly recommend you spend some time in chatham, there is much mor eto do there sites wise than in swellfleet.. chatham is appx 8 miles south of wellfleet, and easy ride... have fun
ps while in bsoton go to a red sox game at fenway, you can buy tickets righ ton the street.. best place in america to see a game, even if you hate baseball...

Nauset Beach is one of my favorite beaches on the Cape. Although, since you will be there in July, you should plan to get there early in order to park.
In Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts is going to have the John Singer Sargent exhibit that was recently at the Smithsonian. Even if that doesn't interest you, the MFA is a wonderful museum. "Sonsie" is a restaurant on Newbury St, not far from where you are staying I think, that is very good. They serve eclectic and interesting cuisine. tends to be crowded, so be sure to make a reservation. Also the Capital Grill is in that area and is one of the best steakhouses in town.
I agree with above recommendation to take in a baseball game. If you don't want to wait to get tickets till you arrive, you can order off the web at www.redsox.com.
The Globe's website www.boston.com has lots of good info, and links to other sites for schedules of various things (museums, concerts, sporting events...)

Dear Sara,
When you are in Wellfleet, make sure that you check out this walking trail in the middle of town that leads you through a city of small fiddler crabs. i was so touched by this marvel, as crabs jumped out of the burrows and did a little dance, then scurry away as we came by.
Provincetown is not to be missed either. Very fun and full of artistic and laid-back people. Check out the Lobster Pot for awesome lobster dinners. Also, you can hit an unbelievable whale watching tour from P-town. I saw a ton of humpbacks and dolphins.
Oh yeah, have some rollwiches in P-town. Deliciosa!!!
Boston is fun, I'm sure that you will find tons to do there no matter where you venture. Just don't miss the Freedom Trail and Boston Common.

2.Stroll in the North End(old Italian section) eat at Mama Marias((617) 242-4687-reservations needed)excellent Italian Cusine!
3.Harvard Square in Cambridge(only 15 minutes from Newbury st., eat at the House of Blues.
4.Walk down Charles street on Beacon Hill to the Boston Common and have a drink at Cheers, which is right on the common.
5.Walk along the Carles River on the Boston side of the River(near the Half shell outdoor concert hall.
6. Have a cafe latte at the Armani Cafe on Newbury st.

I was in Boston a few years ago, the best city in the world, apart from Sydney of course and had some great seafood, chowder etc at place called, I think, 'Anthonys'. The staff are all a hundred years old but the food was great. You'll love the Newbury Street guest House as well.

Sara, I live just outside of Boston, but work right on Newbury St. It is a WONDERFUL place! You will really enjoy the Newbury St. Guest house! There are PLENTY of fine restaurants throughout the city to choose from. One of my FAVIROTIE Italian places right on Newbury St. is called La Famillia, you can go there for lunch and the portions are big enough to feed 2 people! Another nice restaurtant that just opened up here is call Marchelino's, prices are very resonable for what you get. The employees there are very accomadationg and you can watch your food being prepared. This restaurant is right inside the Prudential Center Mall. The Prudential Center tower is 52 stories tall and for a small fee I think like $5 or $6 you can take an elevator to the top and overlook Boston and Cambride. Just a a little more on food before I tell you a little bit on what to see, Anthony's Pier 4 is VERY VERY VERY good seafood, BUT you MUST have Legal's Seafood clam chowder. The chowder at leagals is OUT OF THIS WORLD and is FAR better then Anthonys! Now for sites to see: Definetly do a Duck Tour I think someone had mentioned that earlier they do take advance reservations and I strongly suggest making them in advance because you will be coming at a popular time of year and if you don't make them you will be waiting in line for hours to get on! But it's worth the wait! It brings you all though Boston and a little of Cambridge and then right into the Charles! Very interesting and imformative. The Duck tours leave right from the Prudential Center on Boylston St. One street over from Newbury. The Boston Public Library which is .4 miles from the Prudential Center, is the finish line of the Boston marathon. Take a stoll along the Charles River (about a 5 mile walk or about an hour or so to walk the whole thing.) Most of all to see everything you always wanted to see in Boston walk down to the Boston Common on the Tremont St. side for the begining of the Fredom Trail, (red line on the side walks) this brings you to all the histroical and interesting sites within Boston. Most of all when going through the North End be sure to stop off at Mike's Pastary's and Mama Anna's Restaurant for some fine Italian Food. Hope this helps and HAVE A GREAT TIME WHEN YOU COME HERE!
By the way if you don't feel like walking too much you can take the subway all throughout the city and they do off visitor passports for 1/3/5/7 days. Diffrent prices of course, otherwise you can buy your tokens as needed for just .85 cents! HAVE FUN!

What I love about this forum is seeing other people's opinions. I personally found Legal Seafoods too commercialized, I enjoyed the smaller home-cooked restaurants..... best chowder! mmmmm.
However, it all depends on your outlook.
I did have a delicious trout at Legal though.

As long as we're giving opinions on Legal Seafood, I'm going to weigh in on Heather's side. I live in Boston, and find Legal Seafoods to be just a chain restaurant with pretensions. The food is pretty good (although very simple), but it's about $10 too much per entree. However, both their chowder and smoked bluefish pate are quite good.

I love Wellfleet! Cahoon Hollow Beach is great! the water will still be cold, it's always cold, but you'll get use it playing in the waves. Get there before 10 for parking and park in the Beach Coma parking lot, it's the same price and the $10 you paid can go to food of merchandise. IF you go over to the bay side of Wellfleet try a little dive bar called the Bomb Shelter, Steve the owner is great. Yes, go to P-Town, Hyannis if you like to shop
Boston is one of the greatest cities, it's small so getting around is pretty easy. Newbury St. is nice, take a walk over to the Commons and Faniel Hall. Charles River is worth a trip. There's so much to do, it depends on your tastes.
Enjoy
