BIL wants to go to Harry Carey's. Will we hate it?
We are going to Chicago as three families. BIL's wife is pushing for Harry Carey's for dinner. We are staying at the downtown Hilton on Michigan. First of all, how far is the cab ride. Second, is the place any good?
H and I wanted to go to Carmine's, or Rosebud, or Taverna, or Gioco's. Some really good Chicago Italian place. But, we might be outnumbered. They are now calling other BIL. What should we do???

You won't hate Harry Carey's. Its Italian and the food there is pretty good - the atmosphere is the draw - all the memoribilia, etc. If you want upscale Italian, go to Spiggia, Bice, etc. If you want authentic down home Italian, take a cab to Little Italy near the UIC Campus on Taylor street and take your pick (Tuscany, ORIGINAL Rosebud, etc). In between, there's Italian Village which is fairly close to the Hilton or Carmines, Rosebud, etc which are further from the Hilton (up on Rush street) than Harry Carey's. The chicken vesuvio at Harry Carey's is their signature dish but there are plenty of other options. Its a little noisy but anything other than Spiaggia or Bice will also be loud.

Harry Carey's food is pretty good, I would rank the food above Maggiano's but below Rosebud. I have had perfectly good meals there and the portions are substantial. It is both Italian and a steakhouse. You can take a look at the menu here:
http://www.harrycarays.com/in_chica.htm
It's about 1 1/2 miles from the Hilton on S. Michigan, located in the River North area. It's less than 1/2 mile from Michigan Avenue's shopping district.

I'd rate Harry Carey's food as average to good (about a 6.5 on a scale of 10).
Atmosphere is bustling, loud. Service is OK. It's has more of a pub atmosphere than a nicer restaurant like Rosebud.
I've only eaten there on weekend evenings though, so weekdays are probably different for atmosphere.

Can't add too much to what's already been said, but I like Harry Carey's, especially for steak.
It's not exactly a soothing, romantic place, but the staff is friendly and courteous. (When we ate there, the chef came out and asked if our steaks were cooked OK. That led to a lengthy conversation about quality of steaks and how to cook them.)

For what it's worth (probably not much to you...). The few times I've been there, the waitstaff has pointed out the tables of various Cubs execs and players - although more often at lunch. And they all were very nice and accomodating to the kids who were asking for autographs.

HOLY COW! You're going to be in Chicago, enjoy the legendary Harry's place. Yes, there is great Italian in Chicago but you can find great Italian in any major city....there's only one real Harry Carey's.
