Best plays

Going to NYC in December. Which three plays would you recommend? Thanks for the help.

Traveler: That's a tough question to answer without knowing your tastes. Any of these worth seeing--if they suit your tastes. Listed alphabetically: Cabaret, Chicago, Fosse, It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues, Ragtime. They're all worth seeing. Then, there are the old chestnuts: Les Miserable, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunately, there's not much choice in straight plays at the moment, except for a Noel Coward comedy, Waiting in the Wings, starring Lauren Bacall that opens for previews. Also currently previewing is a revival of Kiss Me Kate.
The question is: What do you like?

The Lion King...absolutly #1, but nearly impossible. (I'm seeing it again in November...of 2000.)
Cabaret...SOOOO GOOD!! (Seeing that for the second time in Jan.)
Les Miserables. Powerful, moving and amazing, amazing music.
Thats my .02 cents!

"Lion King" is by far the best play I've ever seen, and contrary to popular belief, tickets are not impossible to obtain! Go to the box office the day of the performance and wait in line for cancellations. It's worth it. I did this and absolutely loved it.
Les Mis would be my second choice and should be easier to get tickets for.

I really liked Jekyll and Hyde because it showcases the talent of the lead actor since he's in practically every scene from start to finish. The play is also good because you don't get distracted by all the sets and having a large cast. Phantom of the Opera is also good becuase I liked the music and the sets. My third pick of the current Broadway offering would be Les Miserables. Have fun.

"Jekyll and Hyde" really surprised me. I was expecting OK, but sets, lighting, were great. Just wish I had been more familiar with the music.

"Ragtime" was a disappointment. It's a musical that, in every aspect, looks like it should be important, but something is lacking. It has it's moments, (Coalhouse is terrific) but, overall it's long (about 3 hours), and a little preachy about racial prejudice.

Depends on your type of play, but "Rent" was one of my favs - I'm still crazy about "Phantom of the Opera." And "Les Miz" (also long) is still a justifyable hit.

In my opinion, if anything has been running on Broadway for over a year, there's definitely something there that's worthwhile.

Have fun and don't be affraid to act on a hunch on a play to see.

Again, don't know your tastes -- we're all talking musicals, you asked about plays.
All told, I've seen Les Mis 7 times, think the combination of story, music & staging is phenomenal. My husband recently went locally to touring company of Jekyll & Hyde, and left at intermission -- I thought it borrowed from everything (Cabaret, Les Mis, Phantom, etc etc etc) but I knew that it had an incredible cult following, showing that individual taste is everything.
Good luck.

I saw Rent and Death of a Salesman. Don't know if the latter is still there, but it was FANTASTIC and a great musical alternative.

Once again, we need to know your tastes.
I would suggest you investigate Off-Broadway for some interesting choices. It seems to me that a lot of the Broadway musicals emphasize sets and special effects and are low on plot and character. Anyway, I loved RAGTIME and CABARET.
