It really depends on what you're looking for. Bar Harbor has a reputation from days gone by when the very rich and famous vacationed there and built their own little piece of heaven on the Maine coast. Most of the gradure of Bar Harbor was destroyed in a great fire decades ago. This is not to say the town is not pretty because it is, but its not the beginning and the end of everything the way some might have you believe. There are cruises, shops and restaurants and great parks nearby (Acadia is fantastic). Unfortunately there are great crowds as well, it is one of the most visited places in the country. If you like areas that are less traveled and more affordable, there are better, as well as prettier, destinations on the Maine coast. Most of these will be found in the mid-coast area (Portland area up to Bucksport and Castine area). I'm sure there will be plenty of people out there who disagree with me, but to each their own.

Bar Harbor is probably my least liked part of Maine. I think that it is far too crowded and over-priced. In my opinion, there is no reason to venture east of Camden, which is one of my very favorite towns in Maine. I agree with the previous message regarding the mid-coast of Maine, but also like the area between Camden and Boothbay Harbor.

We visited Bar Harbor a couple of years ago, in june, we were lucky with the weather and at that time of year it wasn't at all crowded, I would definitely go back there but again I would avoid the peak season months. Arcadia is wonderful with loads of hiking trails and lots of wildlife. We took a couple of boat trips while we were there which were great to see Bald Eagles Ospreys etc. etc.We stayed at the Hearthside B&B which I can recommend, they even made up picnics for us and lent us a day pack so we could go hiking. We also visited Camden and the surrounding area which we enjoyed ( try the Salty Dog home brew pub in Camden), come to think of it we just love Maine!

Bar Harbor is a small seaside town that is catering to the tourist industry. It is filled with many restaurants, shops, and hotels/motels. It is a busy place. The main attraction is Acadia National Park outside of town. Check on the internet or write to the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and you will get good information. If you don't mind the crowds, you will love this beautiful national park in our state.

We were ripped off by the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company (Bar Harbor, Maine). They did not honor their money back guarantee when we did not see any
whales. They would NOT refund our money. My advise is to use a reputable company!!
