2nd route thru SF
I didn't plan on making a seperate message but the site wiped out the "post an answer".
I was looking at a map and got the bright(?) idea of going 1/17/280/38 to Great Hightway.
We won't be in a big hurry and I like Skyline Blvd (aka 280)
I know MapQuest suggested the Eastbay route but it probably wouldn't be as interesting and I've known MapQuest to not have the best route.
Comment??:-B

Hey, Ed, give it more than 5 minutes!
Your route is fine and definitely the more scenic. I am having a strong sense of deja vu, but I think it was on another thread that I took a vehement stance against the East Bay route. I don't care what MapQuest says either. I would never go via the East Bay. Too much traffic and I've gotten seriously stuck before. Might as well have some trees or the ocean to look at, rather than industrial blight.

PS The "post a reply" option on your other thread was deliberately removed by fodors editor to prevent the thread from turning into a war zone. Unfortunately, this is the current situation with all questions having to do with SF and environs, even one as noncontroversial as yours.
If you want to assess the advice you are getting, click on the person's name and read some of their other posts. That should make things pretty clear.
Have a great trip! The weather here is magnificent right now.

Thanks Marilyn--
Yeah, I know that there has been childish quarrels on SF vs SJ vs SF.
In years gone by we have driven quite a bit in the peninisula area so we sort of know what we are doing. What the heck we are on vacation and intend to enjoy not rush. :-B

Hi ed! I cannot imagine using the "East Bay" route to get home (Petlauma)-Marilyn is so right on in her description of it's difficulty! Though we have never taken the Great Hwy route-a similar route can be had using Sunset Blvd. From 280/1/
Junipero Serra hang a right onto
Brotherhood Way until it deadends at Lake Merced Blvd.-turn right and follow it's curves to Sunset-another right
at Sunset-follow until it dead ends at the GG Park. Go barely into the park and turn tight on Martin Luther King.
Follow thru GG Park to 19th Ave/Park Presidio/1 and your on your way!
We'll have to try the Great Hwy route
when we're not focused on getting home
after a trip

Hello ed,
Speaking as a person who has travled the roads of northern California because of my job in sales, the most reasonable route to Santa Rosa from Monterey is definitely the East Bay route in terms of a leisurely, stress free drive. The traffic through SF surface streets on 19th Ave. or even the great highway can be a pain on weekdays or weekends.
In this case the Mapquest or Yahho route happens to be the best one. A reasonable altenative is to take 1/17/280 and then cut over on 92 east and take the San Mateo bridge over to 880 and continue from there up to 580 then 101. THat way you can expereince the scenery of 280 as well without the hassle of SF traffic. I wouldn't say that the East Bay route is any less interesting than the Peninisula route. I guess interesting is relative. If interesting means being stuck in traffic breathing exhaust fumes, then the Peninisula route through SF is the one to take. Otherwise, the East Bay route would be the best for getting to Santa Rosa from the Monterey area.
It's unfortunate how some "people" must go off topic to try and confuse the issue.
Have a great trip.
