Bike and Computer on plane

Hi.

Any suggestions on taking a bike on Continental from the US to the UK? The box would be approx 60x50x10". Online, it said it would cost about $300 for this extra.

Any other alternatives to getting the bike to the UK safely and not as costly as $300?

Secondly, would you check in a computer? I imagine it will really get banged around. Any other alternatives?

Thanks!

Hopefully you mean a *laptop* computer? I would take it as carry-on onto the plane with you. I would never check something of great monetary value.

Sorry, no other idea about the bicycle. I think that's how people who want to take their own usually do it (in a special boxed, checked thru on the plane).

If it's not a laptop computer, then you would probably be better shipping it. With a cargo shipper, you would have some ability to recoup losses if something happens enroute. With taking it as "checked luggage" on a plane, you have a very limited amount that you can recoup. Shipping the bike and computer might get you a better rate with the shipping company also.

I'd agree with that idea if it's not a laptop. To check DHL or UPS type of shipping options for both items.

Definately check with DHL or UPS for the computer and also the bike. Or perhaps with that rate, you might be better off just purchasing a bike in the UK.

Several years ago my son brought home a bike from the USA via Continental. He asked them beforehand how it should be boxed, what it would cost, etc. When the bike arrived, it was mangled beyond repair. To their credit, after much e-mailing and phone calls, they gave us credit on a future Continental flight for the amount the bike cost (quite a lot). While that was probably the best they could do at that point and we appreciated it, this bike had great sentimental value which obviously could not be replaced. If he had to do it again I am sure he would find alternative means to get a bike from point A to point B.

And a microwave might come in really handy...

Any chance you can live without this stuff for a couple of weeks?

If you are doing a bike trek, pay to ship it right and either carry on your laptop or consider leaving it at home for your trip.

If you are studying in Europe for a semester, carry on your laptop and pay extra to pack your bike right. If your bike isn't worth what it will cost to ship it, consider buying a used bike when you get to Europe.

You may be able to save money by shrinking your bike into a smaller box. Remove the front wheel, handle bars and pedals. Ask a local bike shop for suggestions on how best to pack and the best way to ship.

I think you can easily move with "lab top" and for Bike you should pay for $300. I think this not expensive and quite reasonable. Anyway.......

All the best!
